Update 3:45pm: Swepco reports power has been restored to around 3,000 customers at approximately 3:20pm on Friday, January 12 in the Center area. The cause of the outage is suspected to be a lightning strike of a piece of equipment at the SWEPCO Substation on Hwy 7 East causing it to fail and resulting in the outage. If you are still out of power, contact SWEPCO for your outage at swepco.com
January 12, 2024 - The Shelby County Courthouse will be closing today at noon. Without electricity we cannot serve the public. We apologize for this inconvenience. We will be closed Monday in observance of MLK Day and plan to open on Tuesday, January 16. If the weather prevents the opening on Tuesday, I send a public notice.
I urge everyone to be careful this weekend, Monday and Tuesday will be bad weather days with extremely cold temperatures and possible icy conditions.
Update 12 noon: Approximately 2,000 meters are without power currently due to high winds. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory until 6pm. Northwesterly winds between 20-30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph are expected. Crews are assigned to all current outages and are working as quickly as possible.
January 12, 2024 - Shelby County Commissioners were updated during their meeting January 10, 2024, on the ARPA and LATCF funds which currently are providing funding for several county projects.
During discussion over the weekly expenses Ann Blackwell, County Treasurer, described difficulty with mail delivery relating to the receipt of bills.
“Our mail’s just going everywhere,” said Blackwell. “Juvenile Probation brought over a handful of mail this morning that clearly stated Road 7 Bridge Precinct 4 that was in their box, and one of them was a utility bill.”

January 11, 2024 - 9-1-1 services for the Huxley Community are unavailable at this time. East Tex Telephone advised this is a fiber optic issue and a restoration time has not been announced. In case of an emergency, and you are in the Huxley Community, please directly call the SCSO at 936-598-5601. Please be able to provide the location you are at or a landmark so we can locate you more easily. We will advise when service is restored.
January 12, 2024 - Strong thunderstorms will impact De Soto, Red River, northwestern Natchitoches and Sabine Parishes, southeastern Panola, eastern Shelby, northeastern San Augustine and northwestern Sabine counties through 6:15am.
At 5:10am CST, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Stonewall to Bland Lake. Movement was east at 45 mph.
Hazard: Wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea size hail.

January 10, 2024 - TxDOT crews in the nine-county Lufkin District will begin pre-treatment operations and shift work on Friday ahead of a winter weather event expected late Sunday.
A meeting was held Wednesday morning to plan emergency operations and responses. Crews will begin placing a brine mixture on major roadways, overpasses, and bridges Friday ahead of the predicted winter weather. Crews will re-treat Saturday and/or Sunday, if needed.
