January 17, 2018 - Man enters into this world searching for something more that he cannot see nor feel. Something more than he has. Something more than he knows.

This quest for more is instilled in each of us from before we are born until we either find the answer or we come to the end of our earthly life.
On whom or what we base our individual life’s search depends the outcome of our search and our destiny.

For some it is as the Psalmist once said; “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” (Psalm 20:7)

Yes, some do indeed trust in the things of this world for their “something more” while others, the more fortunate, trust in the Lord God for their answers to joy, peace and happiness.
May you belong in this group of searchers.

For those who trust in the things of this world can be best described by these words from the book of Romans.

“Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.” (Romans 1:22-23)

Claiming to be wise they seek earthly wealth, fame and fortune, all the while not realizing that no matter the amount of riches they may amass, there is not enough in all the earth to satisfy their quest for something more. For what they search for is the Lord God and he is not found in fame nor fortune but in his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Before Jesus ascended back to the Father in heaven he told his disciples not to be troubled for he was going to his Father’s house where he would prepare a room for everyone who loves him. And that if he prepared the place that he would then return for those who love him.

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” (John 14:3)

Jesus then assured them that what he had said was truth when he said; “I am the way, the truth, and the life and no man comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

There, my friend is the answer to the quest for something more in life. To know and understand that there is NO other way to find what you seek but through the Lord Jesus Christ.

As Peter and John stood before the Jewish court being tried for preaching the gospel of Christ and for healing a lame man; Peter being filled with the Holy Spirit then said to them; “if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead - by him this man is standing before you, well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:9-12)

Now Peter was almost never at a loss for words nor courage and at these words the court was silenced for they knew then that these men had indeed been with Jesus and were speaking on his authority and that they could not overcome the word of Jesus on their own.

They understood then what Peter was saying but they just could not accept the Lord Jesus as their Sovereign Lord and Master.

The question today is, can you?

Can you trust in the Lord and not in the world?

I pray you can, for only then will you find what you seek which is the true joy and peace and happiness that is only found in the Lord. May his blessings be upon you this day...

January 9, 2018 - Are you ready for the coming of the Lord? If he comes this morning will you welcome him or will you try to hide from him knowing that you are not prepared to stand before him in judgement?

Those are hard questions that each must ask of himself for the day is coming when the Lord will come and call his own to him, will you be in that group, or, will you be left in the much larger group to face the Great Tribulation?

“Turn, O Lord, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love.” (Psalm 6:4) Make that plea this day that the Lord will lift you up in glory; “For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” (Matthew 24:27)

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” (Matthew 24:36-39) Eating and drinking and marrying as if nothing were about to happen, that is the way it is going to happen on the great day of the coming of the Lord. Will you be ready?

“Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. Therefore stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. (Matthew 24:40-42)

There will be panic and confusion like the world has never seen when the great day of the coming of the Lord happens. To be left and find that many of one’s friends and relatives have simply disappeared will be the most dramatic happening those who are left will have ever seen.

There will be airplanes where the saved have been lifted from their seats, some even the pilots, those who do not know the Lord left to crash on their own. The same for people riding in cars and trucks and trains; the saved lifted and the remaining left to crash on their own.

Confusion and panic like the world has never seen.

And in the midst of all of that confusion; one will rise claiming to be the savior, the one who can save all. And men will gravitate to him and celebrate him even calling him lord, not knowing that he is indeed the antichrist, the deliverer of their most gruesome suffering and pain to come.

Are you ready for the coming of the Son of Man today? If he is to come today will you be lifted to him in the clouds and transported to heaven? Or, will you be left to crash of your own accord?

This decision is yours today. You can choose to remain in the lost state that we are all born in, or, you can choose to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Master, choose to turn from your wicked ways, to repent of your sins and be accepted into the family of our Lord.

That day is coming, no one knows the day or the hour, but it is coming, will you be ready?

“Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:44)

Jesus is knocking on your heart’s door this morning, will you open that door and let him in? I pray that you do before it is too late. May his holy blessings be upon you this day and forever..

January 1, 2018 - Sunday was New Year’s Eve, a secular holiday, but with, certainly, spiritual overtones. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are still in the season of Christmastide. The coming of a New Year is a good time for a new beginning and a new, brighter attitude. The scripture for my sermon was Ecclesiastes 3:1-13. This is a very popular reading but on first or second or third reading, it can be disturbing. And yet the author says there is a season for everything under the sun. I read about a gentleman who went to a wishing well on New Year’s Day. He had gone last year on New Year’s Eve. He made his wish and threw in some coins. “I wish for a big, fat bank account and a slim body. I sure hope you don’t get these mixed up like you did last year!” I am still into making New Year’s resolutions, but they certainly have changed over the decades.

Our Sunday school lesson focused on the need for unity. We Christians certainly have failed often at uniting to carry out the work of the Christ. Our scripture from Ephesians 4:1-16 stressed the importance of being in agreement and not blown around by trivial things. I guess we need to decide what strikes at the heart of Christianity and then make sure we are united in those things.

Last week our crew went to Lakeside Assisted Living for the monthly program. As is usual in late December, some residents and volunteers were still “Christmasing” and unavailable. But the group was merry anyway. Mrs. Hilda kept the music—Christmas and not—lively, and the emcee duties were handled by Maggie, Pastor Matt, and Sue (triple threat). Pastor Matt shared a devotional on Luke, the meaning of “In the Garden,” and a history of “Hark! the Herald Angels Sing.” Nora explained the meaning of all parts of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” and then led a lively singing of it. Gene sang Christmas songs also, but with different rhythms (like calypso) and tunes. Sue read How Santa Got His Job. Instead of the usual “God Be with You,” the group finished with “Silent Night” and a benediction from Pastor Matt.

I have been working on “End of the Year Reports” for the district and conference. Unlike in days of old, everything is done online and no longer requires pastors to show up at the district office to be audited. We Methodists tend to be very methodical, and I think that is a good idea. I really appreciate our treasurer, Gene, who pays our bills and takes care of all the financial needs of the church. Gene is always a great help in getting the financial part of the reports completed. After worship, we loaded up the cans of soup to deliver to Community Christian Services next week. January’s donation will be tuna.

We at Paxton United Methodist Church wish everyone a Happy New Year. If you are looking for a place to worship God as part of your New Years resolutions, we certainly would love to have you. We are small but neighborly.

“Whoever you are, in whatever faith you were born, whatever creed you profess; if you come to this house to find God you are welcome here.” Paxton United Methodist Church is an inviting church that takes to heart the idea of “Open Doors, Open Hearts, Open Minds.” Sunday School starts at 9:30 and Worship begins at 10:00. Our email address is paxtonumc@yahoo.com. If you would like the weekly email newsletter about Paxton Methodist you can send me your email address to the Paxton email address and I will add you to the list. Godspeed.

December 29, 2017 - Strong Truimph Church cordially invites everyone to their 1st annual New Year’s Eve Holy Ghost Musical. Special guests include Chuck and the Guiding Clouds of Huntsville, Texas; voices of Praise of Shreveport, Louisiana; the Heavenly Stars of San Augustine, Texas; and Bright Morning Star Choir of Center, Texas.

What do most people do on New Year's Eve? Usually they gather with family and friends and prepare to watch the old year out and the new year in.

Some, however, just celebrate at home alone. If you have nowhere to go, or just want to celebrate in a different way, Elder Faye Dell Allen and the members of Strong Triumph Church invite you to join in with them as they celebrate the old year out and the new year in with their 1st annual New Year's Eve Holy Ghost Musical Explosion, to be held December 31, 2017 starting at 9 p.m.

We are anticipating some great, phenomenal musical groups who are preparing to come and lift up the name of the Lord.

For more information, please contact Elder Faye Dell Allen at 936-368-2611/936-572-5810!
