Timpson Bears Baseball Complex, Tuesday, March 26, 2019 –

On Tuesday, the Timpson Bears varsity baseball team overcame the visiting Joaquin Rams, in a District 23 2A game, by a 14-0 score. The Bears only allowed a single hit, a double by Eli Huerta in the first inning. Joaquin would eventually have four more base runners who reached on two errors and two walks.

Bears Garrett Askins, Braden Courtney, and Gabe Smith teamed up to strike out seven Rams batters during the 4 ½ inning contest which was called due to the conference’s ten-run-mercy-rule.

Timpson drew 10 free bases, and reached on eight hits, including a towering grand slam by Cody Hodge in the fourth inning.

The Bears are currently in fifth place in District 23 action with a 4-3 win-loss record. Their season mark is at 8-7. They next travel to Garrison for a district game with the Bulldogs on Friday, March 29, 2019 at 6:30 p.m.

Joaquin is in sixth place in conference play. Their league mark is 2-5 and they stand at 2-9 overall. The Rams will host the Martinsville Pirates on Friday, March 29, 2019, at 6:30 p.m.

March 20, 2019 (Entry Form) - The 3rd Annual Stan Burgay Memorial Bass Tournament benefiting the Stan Burgay Memorial Scholarship Fund is set for March 30, 2019 from 6:45am until 3pm at Sam Rayburn's Cassels Boykin Pavilion.

The team tournament has a $150 entry fee, includes Big Bass, 80% payback. If mailing in entry with a check, make payable to Stanley Burgay Memorial Bass Tournament, Attn: David Koonce, PO Box 2108, Center, Texas 75935. Must be postmarked by March 22.

Trailering permitted. No fishing before 6:45am and no fishing after 3pm. Be checked in and in line by 4pm. No off limits. Enter the night before the tournament at the Cassels Boykin Pavilion between 6pm and 8pm or enter the morning of the tournament at the Cassels Boykin Pavilion starting at 5:15am.

March 25, 2019 - The Center High School boys and girls will be playing in play-off games this week. The Girls Soccer team will travel to Jasper High School on Thursday, March 28th to play against Lumberton at 5pm.

The Boys Soccer team will play against Hamshire Fannett at Jasper High School on Friday, March 29th with a 7pm game time.

Ticket prices for both games are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Joaquin Lady Rams Softball Complex, Friday, March 22, 2019 –

The Joaquin Lady Rams varsity softball team has extended their District 22 2A record to 4-2 after defeating the Wells Pirates by a 15-0 score. The game was shortened to four innings due to the league’s mercy rule. Joaquin is on a 3-game winning streak and they have not allowed a run for three contests.

Joaquin got on the board early with runs batted in which led to scores from JJ Bass, Chloe Mason, Molly Mason, Kennedy Stanley helping the Lady Rams take a 5-0 lead into the second inning.

Chloe Mason struck out 3 of the 4 Lady Pirate batters she faced in the top of the second inning. Joaquin extended their lead to 10-0 by the end of the second frame.

Mason struck out the only three Wells batters that came to the plate in the top of the third inning. Hits by Lady Rams Molly Mason, Chrislyn Pena, Kalie Brooks, and Maddisyn Cheatwood, helped extend the JHS lead to 14-0 by the end of the third inning.

The Lady Ram’s defense set down Wells in 1-2-3 fashion with Chloe Mason getting two more of her 11 strike outs for the day.

Lady Ram Emma Martin drew a bases-loaded walk which scored the 15th run which ended the contest by the league’s mercy-rule being enforced.

Joaquin will next face the Gary Lady Bobcats next Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at Gary High School. The first pitch is slated for 5 p.m.

San Antonio Alamodome, Saturday, March 9, 2019 –

The Shelbyville Dragons Varsity Basketball Team defeated the Gruver Greyhounds 67-48 to win the Class 2A  state title at the UIL Basketball Playoffs. This completed an awesome 39-3 season for the Dragons who last won the title in 1984.

Shelbyville shot 25-51 from the field, 7-11 from 3-point range and they out-rebounded Gruver by a 36-28 margin.

Shelbyville finished the opening period on a 19-2 run and led 21-7 going into the second quarter. They had a 37-19 lead over Gruver at halftime, and the Dragons led 54-35 at the end of the third stanza.

Jay Buckley led the Dragons with 28 points. Fellow Dragon Jordan Boykins had 19 points. The Dragons led by as much as 24 points. This was the school’s fourth championship appearance in which they have come away with three titles.

Coach David Schmitt and his staff have helped the team to reach back-to-back state tournament appearances. Last season the Dragons were semifinalist.

On Friday Shelbyville had dominated in their win over the Hearne Eagles (25-4) with an 83-51 win which they led from start to finish. The game was a Class 2A Semifinal and moved the Dragons into the finals matchup with the Gruver Greyhounds.

 

Alamodome San Antonio, Friday, March 8, 2019

The Shelbyville Dragons (38-3) dominated in their win over the Hearne Eagles (25-4 ) with a 83-51 win which they led from start to finish. The game was a Class 2A Semifinal and moves the Dragons into a Texas 2A Final matchup with the Gruver Greyhounds on Saturday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m.

Two early buckets by Dragons Jordan Boykins and Jay Buckley gave Shelbyville an early 4-0 advantage. Shelbyville led 14-8 at the 3 minute mark. They went on a 15-4 run at the end of the opening stanza and held a 23-10 lead at the conclusion of the first period of play.

Both the Eagles and Dragons scored ten points in the second frame and Shelbyville took a 33-20 lead in to the midway intermission.

The Dragons exploded for 31 points during the third period and only allowed Hearne 16 points. This gave SHS a 64-36 lead going in to the fourth quarter.

Multiple scores during the fourth period by Jordan Boykins and Jay Buckley, and two points on a fast break by LD Coleman, helped the Dragons outpace the Eagles by a 19-15 margin in the final period and take the 83-51 win.

The Dragons were led by Jay Buckley with 28 points and Jordan Boykins with 24.

Dragons Leading 23-10 at End of 1st Period

March 8, 2019 - The Shelbyville Dragons are ahead 23 to 10 against Hearne at the end of the 1st period in the first game of the UIL Boys's State Basketball Tounrnament Final Four at the Alamodome in 2A State Semi-Finals.

Center Roughriders Stadium, Tuesday, March 5, 2019 -

The hometown Center Roughriders Varsity Soccer Team defeated the visiting Henderson Lions by a 3-2 score on Tuesday to keep their District 19 4A record unblemished with three conference games remaining. Center now stands at 13-6 overall with league play at 7-0. The team is coached by Gerardo Martinez.

The game was tied at 1-1 when Adrian Huerta scored for Center to give the Roughriders a 2-1 advantage with 9 minutes remaining in the first half. ‘Rider teammate Alan Espino scored the first goal of the second half which gave the Roughriders a 3-1 advantage.

The Lions had a goal scored off a header negated because of an infraction with 7:42 left in the game. The Lions were able to regroup and scored on a Sevastian DeLeon goal with 4:51 remaining in the contest. This made the score 3-2 in Center’s favor. This proved to be the last score of the game.
