The Center Roughriders recognized their senior baseball athletes during their final homestand on Monday.  Roughriders Braden Strong, Juan Gonzalez, and Blaine Gaddy, along with family escorts were announced before the Roughrider’s game with fellow District 20 Class 4A Carthage High School began.

The baseball game did not go Centers way as they fell to the Carthage Bulldogs 11-1. The game was shortened to five innings due to the leagues ten-run-mercy-rule enforcement.

Carthage jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in a rally which saw them capitalize on two hits, a walk, and three Center errors.

Center answered back with a baserunner in the bottom half of the first inning when Jayden Hicks drew a lead-off walk and scored after stealing second and a base hit by Zack Smith. This pulled the ‘Riders to within 3-1 of the Bulldogs.

Four base hits and another error helped the Bulldogs balloon their lead to 6-1 during the top of the third inning. This score held up until Carthage rallied for five more runs in the top of the fifth frame.

Center will face the Hudson Hornets, at Hudson High School, on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at 7 p.m. for the Roughriders final regular season game. Center is still in contention for the final District 20 playoff spot with a 2-9 conference mark and a 7-14-1 overall record.

On Tuesday, the Shelbyville Dragons moved their District 23 2A varsity baseball mark to 10-0, with an 11-1 win over the visiting Timpson Bears. The game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cole Ferguson blasted a three-run homer over the left-centerfield fence which ended the contest due to the league’s 10-run-mercy-rule.

Timpson kept the game close through the early and middle stages. The Bears led 1-0 in the top of the first frame but the Dragons tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning when Trevor Wilburn scored aided by a throwing error. Timpson committed five errors during the contest.

The teams went into the bottom half of the fourth inning with Shelbyville still just leading 2-1. A big rally soon gave the Dragons the advantage they needed as they ballooned their lead to 8-1, using 3 errors, 3 hits and a walk during the inning. On the day, the Dragons used 7 hits and five free bases to gain the ten-point win.

Junior Dragons’ pitcher Zach Clark helped keep the Bears off the base paths late. He recorded three of his 12 strikeouts during the final two frames. The only Bear to reach base in the fifth and sixth innings was Caden Soloman who legged out a mishandled grounder by a Dragons infielder.

Shelbyville is currently atop the District 23 leaderboard with a 10-0 mark. They are 12-4 for the season.

The Dragons will host the Martinsville Pirates at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2019 at Shelbyville High School.
