Center Roughriders Gymnasium, Friday, January 11, 2019 -

The Center Roughriders varsity basketball team saw a close District 20 Class 4A game slip away during a 51-42 loss to the visiting Carthage Bulldogs. This game served as both teams conference opener.

Seven points, in the first period, from junior guard Jayden Hicks helped the Roughriders keep pace in the early stages and the two teams ended the first quarter of play tied at 11-11. Hicks finished the game with a game-high 21 points for the night.

Carthage was able to outscore Center 9-7 in the second period and the Bulldogs took a narrow 20-18 advantage into the halftime intermission.

Carthage outscored Center once again in the third period but only by a single point 15-14. The two teams headed to the fourth quarter with Carthage leading 35-32.

Carthage got nine points during the fourth period from senior guard Stephen Darden which helped them extend their final lead to nine points. Kai Horton led the Bulldogs with 15 points for the night.

The Roughriders are coached by Hiram Harrison and are now 6-12 overall.  They are at 0-1 in conference action.  They will travel to Hudson High School on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 for a 7 p.m. tipoff with the Hornets. The Hornets had a bye for district play on Friday. Their record stands at 14-10 for the season.

January 11, 2019 - Over the ten year history of Tenaha Soccer the Lady Tigers had never beaten 4A Center. Ten years ago, the Lady Tigers made history as the first Class A soccer team in Texas High School history. And yesterday, history was made once again with the “Shelby County Girls’ Soccer Championship” win over the 4A Roughriders. 

With the soccer season barely underway, the girls’ soccer team has several wins in their column. They have defeated New Summerfield, 2-1, Gladewater 3-2, and Center 2-1 in penalty kicks. The Lady Tiger’s only loss was to 3A Waskom, 4-0. 

They will be playing Carthage Saturday morning, January 12th, in the Waskom Tournament and if they take the win they will play for the championship. Coach Lauri Sisk and Lady Tigers’ Soccer team is off to a great start for the 2019 soccer season.

January 10, 2019 - Shelbyville Basketball games scheduled January 11 (Friday) will begin at 5:00 pm. Games are Jr. Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys versus Tenaha.

Tuesday, January 8, 2019, Joaquin Rams Gymnasium –

The Joaquin Lady Rams Varsity basketball team won their first District 22 2A contest this year when the defeated the visiting Garrison Lady Bulldogs by a 43-38 margin. This boosted the Lady Rams to 1-5 in conference action. They are 9-13 for the season.

Joaquin fell behind 4-0 early in the first period but got buckets from freshmen guard JJ Bass and freshman post Victoria Byrd to tie the game at 4-4 with two minutes left. Another score by Secoya Barnes gave Joaquin their first lead and JHS led 6-4 with 1:30 minutes left in the opening frame.

Garrison tied the game at 6-6 with a minute left but Byrd was able to give Joaquin a narrow 8-6 after sinking two free throws after time expired on the first quarter clock.

Kennedy Standley added five points to the Lady Rams tally in the second period and helped Joaquin keep pace with Garrison and Joaquin took a very narrow 16-15 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.

Early steals in the third stanza by Riley Sherrod, Kalie Brooks, JJ Bass, and Kennedy Standley helped Joaquin limit the Garrison offensive possessions and the Lady Rams took a 26-20 lead into the fourth quarter.

Garrison cut the Joaquin lead to just one point early in the fourth period but five consecutive points by Lady Ram Kalie Brooks gave Joaquin a 31-27 lead with five minutes left in the game. Brooks, Barnes and Byrd cashed in more points for JHS in the late stages of the game to help secure the 43-28 win.

Victoria Byrd led the Lady Rams with 14 points. Other Lady Rams who scored for the night were Secoya Barnes 8, Kalie Brooks 7, Kennedy Standley 5, Riley Sherrod 5, and JJ Bass scored 4 points.

Joaquin will travel to Woden High School on Friday, January 11, 2019 for a 6 p.m. tipoff with the Lady Eagles who are 5-1 in District 22 action. Woden defeated Martinsville 39-24 on Tuesday.

January 8, 2019 - Center Boys Basketball game versus Henderson has been cancelled for tonight, January 8th.

The Shelbyville Dragons varsity basketball team reached the title game of Tenaha’s Holiday Hoops Invitational Tournament but fell 62-55 in a hard-fought battle with the Lipan Indians. The battle between top ranked Class 1A and 2A Division I teams was fast paced throughout.

Lipan’s Layton Sharp exploded for 17 points in the first quarter alone and helped the Indians jump out to a 24-13 lead by the end of the opening frame. Sharp had an additional eight points in the second stanza to boost his first half point total to 25. He eventually had a game-high 32 points.

The third quarter saw Shelbyville’s Cole Ferguson score 10 of his team’s 23 points during the period to help the Dragons to cut the previous 15-point deficit to just 9 points. Shelbyville went into the final quarter trailing Lipan 46-37. Ferguson had a team high 22 points for the game. Teammate Jay Buckley chipped in 19 points to help the Dragon’s cause. Ferguson and Buckley were named to the Holiday Hoops Tournament's All Tournament team.

Shelbyville was able to outscore Lipan by an 18-16 margin in the final period. But this was too-little-too-late as Lipan took the 62-55 win for the tournament’s title.

The Dragons, coached by David Schmitt, were Class 2A Division 1 finalist last season. They are scheduled to play the Joaquin Rams in their third District 22 Class 2A game at Shelbyville High School’s Dragons Gymnasium, at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019. The Dragons are currently 2-0 in district action and 19-2 overall.

Tenaha’s Special Events Center, Saturday, December 28, 2018 –

The Timpson Lady Bears reached the championship finals round of the 10th Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Invitational Basketball Tournament where they were defeated by Martin’s Mill Lady Mustangs by a 44-34 score.

Martins Mill built a 10-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and they had a 30-17 lead by the midway break. The Timpson Lady Bears defense pitched a shutout however in the third stanza and the Lady Bears scored the only seven points of the third quarter. Timpson trailed only 24-30 going into the final frame.

The Lady Mustangs were able to outpace the Bears 14-10 to take the 44-34 win.

Martins Mill was led by Mollie Daniel with 14 points, teammate Taylor Sparks chipped in 10.

Timpson was led by Brylee Behrens with 11, Laiton Braddock added 9 points to the THS scoring tally. Behrens and Braddock were also recognized as all tournament honorees.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragon’s Girls, and Joaquin Ram’s Boys, varsity basketball teams competed in the 2018 Tenaha Holiday Hoops Consolation Bracket Championships on Saturday morning.

Shelbyville faced the Lipan Lady Indians but fell by a 58-38 final score. The game started out close and a Madison Moudy 2 pointer at the buzzer which ended the first quarter gave Lipan a narrow 7-6 advantage. Two scores each from Lady Dragons Brooke Elliot and Tykevia Blount helped Shelbyville take a 13-11 lead, by the midway point of the second period. Five points near the end of the period by sophomore forward Maggie Peacock gave Lipan the advantage they needed to take a narrow 21-16 lead into the locker room at the midway break.

Lipan went on a 12-0 scoring run which Lady Dragon Tykevia Blount ended with a bucket which cut the LHS lead to32-18 with less than four minutes left in the third stanza. The Lady Indians eventually took a 44-26 advantage into the fourth period.

The Lady Dragons fought back to cut the Lady Indian lead down to as little as 12 points at one point in the final quarter but Lipan eventually extended their lead to the 58-38 final score.

Lipan’s leading score was Madison Moudy who posted a game-high 19 points. Her teammate Taylor Clark chipped in 15.

Shelbyville was led by Brooke Elliott with 10 points, Kiana Bennett 7, Tykevia Blount 6, Jasmine Osby 4, Taniya Barnes 3, Faith Ridgeway 2, Kenzie Murry 2, Alicia Gaitlin 1.

The Joaquin Rams boys varsity consolation game with the Kemp Yellojackets followed the Lady Dragons game. Kemp was able to take the consolation trophy by defeating Joaquin 59-33.

Eleven points by Joaquin’s Eleazor Huerta helped the Rams gain a 17-13 lead by the conclusion of the first period. Joaquin was still within striking distance at halftime and but trailed 29-23.

Huerta hit a jumper at the 3:20 minute mark of the third quarter which would see Kemp still leading 37-30. From this point of the contest Joaquin went on a scoring drought that saw the Yellowjacket on a 22-0 scoring run which was ended by a Connor Bragg bucket with only 1:47 left in the game. Kemp outscored Joaquin 15-3 in the final period to help take the 59-33 win.

Boomer Irvin led Kemp with 20 points. Joaquin was led by Eli Huerta with 15, Conner Bragg added 8, Nick Matthews 6, Trenton Ramsey 4, Danny Huerta added 3 points to the Ram’s tally.

Tenaha Special Events Center, Friday, December 28, 2018 –

The Tenaha Tigers varsity basketball team has moved on to the semifinal round on the 2018 Tenaha Holiday Hoops Invitational Basketball Tournament by winning a hard fought contest , by a 54-39 score, over the Thorndale Bulldogs.

The Tigers led throughout the contest and they held an 11-3 advantage at the end of the opening period. By halftime Tenaha had grew their lead to 12 points and led 25-13.

Thorndale’s Sam Reeves, who had a game-high 21 points, got hot in the third stanza and he helped the Bulldogs cut the THS lead to just six points. The Tigers led 36-30 going into the final quarter of play.

Frequent substitutions during the early stages helped the Tigers keep fresh players flowing into the contest in the final minutes and the Tigers utilized buckets from six different players in the final period to build their lead to 15 points by game’s end.

JaQualin Franks led the Tigers with 15 points, Jeremy Patton added 13, Hayden Jenkins 11, Trindon Claiborne 10, Erik Smith and Juarmez Brock each scored 2 points. Tenaha will face Lipan High School at Tenahas’ SEC tonight  at 8 p.m.

Tenaha Tiger Gymnasium, Friday, December 28, 2018 –

The Tenaha Lady Tigers varsity basketball team bounced back from a tough loss last Thursday to win a Round 2 game against the Beckville Lady Bearcats by a 45-22 score.

Tenaha jumped out to an 11-0 lead by the midway point of the first quarter and led 11-3 by the end of the first period.

The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Bearcat 13-6 in the second quarter and led 24-9 at the halftime break.

Beckville held closer to Tenaha in the third stanza as the Lady Tigers only outpaced them 9-8. The THS lead only grew by a single point and the teams went into the fourth period with Tenaha carrying a 33-17 advantage.

Scores for Tenaha in the final quarter by Hunter Collins, Addy Duncan, Kamari Gray and Jonica Glaze helped the Lady Tigers outpace the Lady Bearcats 12-5 in the final period, helping them earn the 45-22 win.

The Lady Tigers have no time to celebrate, as what is often the case in Holiday Hoops Consolation Bracket tournament play, the Tenaha team move on to play another round at Panola Community College in Carthage at 11:30 a.m. today, Friday, December 28, 2018 against the winner of the Lipan/ Sabine game.
