Center Lion’s Club Ballpark, Saturday, July 7, 2018 –

Twenty-one teams from Texas have arrived in Center to take part in three Dixie League State Baseball Tournaments being played at Center Lion’s Club Ballpark. Two Divisions, the Ozone Division II South Regional State Tournament and the Ozone Div. I Tournament, will be decided by Saturday. The Dixie State Junior Tournament, playing a ‘Round-Robin Format’, will be decided on Wednesday, June 11, 2018.

Saturday’s action started early and saw Eustace take an 11-0 decision over Central in Ozone Division II play.

In Dixie Junior 13 years old and under action, Hudson took an early 3-0 lead. Huntington cut the Hudson Hornet lead to 3-2 by the end of the top half of the third inning. Hudson’s Kaden Brasher doubled and later scored to help extend Hudson’s lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning.

A big fourth inning, which included a two run homer by Isaac Wallis, saw the Hudson team extend their lead to 9-2. Huntington fought back with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. This cut the Hornet’s lead to three runs at 6-9.

Hudson scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and took an 11-6 lead. The five-point lead held up due to some explosive pitching by closing pitcher Isaac Wallis who set down the Huntington Red Devil batting order in 1-2-3 fashion during the final inning.

No local teams are left in this weekend’s tournament but Center Dixie President Jason Mitchell, along with Vice-President Robby Dubea and a dozen volunteers, have their hands full hosting 21 teams from Livingston, Eustace, Huntington, Corsicana, Henderson, Palestine, LaPorte, Bullard, Hudson, West Rusk, Central, Trie-Cities, Anuhac, Chapel Hill, Malakoff, Brownsville, and Onalaska. Some of these towns have multiple teams in different divisions.

Center Lions Ballpark, Center Texas, Saturday, June 23, 2018 –

Saturday saw Dixie League District Tournament action heat up with early day games between Pineland and Huntington, as well as Tyler County and Center.

In the day’s first game Huntington wasted no time when they got a double from Adyn Self which scored two teammates. Self himself scored later and Huntington took a 3-0 lead by the end of the first frame.

Pineland pulled to within 1-3 of Huntington when Andrew Lane hit a double off the leftfield wall which scored Briley Rogers.

Huntington scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning and took a 5-1 lead which held up for the remainder of the six inning contest.

Center played Tyler County in the second game of the day. Center allowed no runs in the top of the first inning. They got runs from Lance Wilburn, Colby Parker, Dallas Whiteside, Daniel Gonzales, Zayne Hennigan and Kaden Dixon to take a 6-0 lead by the end of the first inning.

Gonzales drove in Trent Jefferson, Wilburn and himself with a three run homer over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the second inning. This gave Center a 9-1 lead.

A three run double by Connor Henson with the bases loaded gave Center a 12-1 lead, in the bottom of the fourth inning. This ended the game due to the league’s mercy rule.

Center hit safely seven times and gained six free bases. Tyler County had two hits and four walks. Jayton Binfet and Connor Henson shared the pitching duties for Center and teamed up for four strikeouts.

District Tournament play will continue at Center through Monday June 25, 2018.

June 18, 2018 - The City of Center and Center Youth Baseball are excited to announce the 2018 Dixie Regional World Series will be hosted in Center from Friday, July 20 through Monday, July 23.

Last October, the City Council created a committee to start the process of soliciting the World Series. Unlike the other baseball tournaments hosted, the bid is not a financial commitment, but rather what can the community offer during the event. The World Series is hosted by larger cities across Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. "This truly is a great opportunity to showcase our town to others who would normally not have a reason to visit Center," said Center Mayor David Chadwick. "This is quite an accomplishment for our community and the committee to secure such a significant event for a town our size."

"The Regional World Series consists of 35-40 teams from the South," explained Center Recreation Director Jason Mitchell. "Center will be allowed to have a host team in each division and this also gives our players some great exposure to another level of competition."

"We really want these families and teams to have a great experience in Center and we need community support to represent ourselves well," Chadwick continued. There will be volunteer opportunities during the World Series, including staffing the tournament. "We also need host families to show hospitality to our out-of-town visitors." Lastly, there are sponsorship opportunities for local businesses during the tournament. The deadline for sponsors to get their ads in the tournament book is July 1.

To facilitate communication and information, the World Series will have a mobile app. Simply download the Attendify app and search for DYB to stay current on this event. (Corrected search to DYB)

Anyone interested in sponsoring, staffing the tournament, or being a host family should visit the City website at www.CenterTexas.org or contact Jason Mitchell at 936/590-7196.

June 8, 2018 - Justin Raymond, a 7th grade student at Shelbyville Jr. High School recently competed in the Texas Jr. High Rodeo Finals in Gonzales, Texas. While there, he and his partner, George Chambers from Benton Louisiana, ended up winning Reserve State Grand Champion in the Team Roping Event and also earned a position on the Texas National Junior High rodeo team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Huron, South Dakota, June 24th thru June 30th to compete at the 14th annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo (NJHFR) in the Team Roping Competition.

Featuring roughly 1,000 contestants from 43 states, five Canadian provinces, Australia and Mexico, the NJHFR is the world's largest junior high rodeo. In addition to competing for more than $80,000 in prizes, NJHFR contestants will also be vying for more than $200,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named a National Junior High Finals Rodeo World Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 – based on their combined times/scores in the first two rounds – to advance to Saturday evening’s final round. World champions will then be determined based on their three-round combined times/scores.

Again, this year, the Saturday championship performance will be televised nationally as a part of the Cinch High School Rodeo Tour telecast series on RFD-TV. Live broadcasts of all NJHFR performances will air on: www.RidePass.com. Performance times are 7 p.m. on June 24th, and 9 a.m. & 7 p.m. each day thereafter.

Along with great rodeo competition and the chance to meet new friends from around the world, NJHFR contestants have the opportunity to enjoy shooting sports, volleyball, contestant dances, family-oriented activities, church services sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys, and shopping at the NJHFR tradeshow, as well as visiting area attractions as Huron hosts the NJHFR this year. To follow your local favorites at the NJHFR, visit www.NHSRA.com daily for complete results. For ticket information and reservations, visit www.sdstatefair.com.
