(Photo Album) The Center Roughriders Varsity Football team’s record fell to 1-3 on Friday when they lost their 2018 Homecoming, to the Henderson Lions, by a 37-7 score. The Lions season record improved to 2-2.

Prior to the football game Jennifer Huichapa was named as Center High School’s 2018 Homecoming Queen.

Henderson scored first after driving 75 yards in 9 plays. The drive was capped with a 21-yard touchdown run by Collin Everitt. An Axel Romero extra point kick gave the Lions a 7-0 lead with just over ten minutes left in the first quarter.

Lion’s linebacker Brady Odom recovered a Roughriders’ fumble on the fourth play of Center’s first offensive drive, he was able to advance the dropped pigskin to the CHS 15 yard line.

Henderson wasted no time making the ‘Riders pay as Eli Jones took a handoff on first down 15 yards to the endzone for Henderson’s second score. A missed extra point kick saw the Lions lead the game by a 13-0 margin with 8:34 remaining in the first quarter.

Center started their second drive off at their own 17 yard line but a bad snap backed them up to their three yard line. On second –down- and- 26 –yards-to-go, Marques Hall took a short pass from Center quarterback Jayden Hicks and raced 97 yards for Center’s only touchdown of the game. Alexis Lopez kicked the extra point for CHS and the Roughriders had cut the Lion’s lead to 13-7 with 7:53 left in the opening period of play.

Axel Ramirez kicked a 43-yard field goal at the beginning of the second quarter which gave Henderson a 16-7 advantage. Jones scored his second touchdown with 8 minutes remaining in the first half. This gave HHS a 23-7 lead which held up for the remainder of the first half.

Henderson was able to score additional touchdowns in each the third and fourth quarters and they were able to make the stops defensively to keep Center from gaining ground.

Next Friday, September 28, 2018, will see Center travel to Grace Community at Tyler for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against the Cougars. Grace Community is 3-1 and they defeated Wills Point on Friday by a 42-34 score.

Friday, September 14, 2018, Shelbyville Dragons’ Football Stadium –

(Photo Album) The Shelbyville Dragons’ Varsity Football team fought hard to stay in the game last Friday.  The Dragons saw a game where they trailed only 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, balloon into a lopsided 31-0 loss by game’s end.

Joaquin recovered a Shelbyville fumble during the Dragons’ first drive. The Rams then drove the football downfield enough to give junior Rams kicker Jesus Bravo a 25-yard field goal attempt. He sailed his kick through the uprights to give Joaquin a 3-0 advantage with 4:18 left in the first stanza.

Joaquins’ next score came on a 1-yard scoring touchdown run by junior fullback Ian Shahan with 8:58 left in the first half. Bravo added an extra point kick to give JHS a 10-0 advantage.

Shelbyvilles’ next drive went 3-and-out but LD Coleman made good on a 48-yard punt which pinned Joaquin back at the Rams 15-yard line.

Connor Bragg took the handoff on the first play of the Ram’s possession and weaved 85 yards for a Joaquin score with 7:10 left in the second period. Both teams had another possession during the first half but were unable to score. The two teams headed to the lockeroom for the midway intermission with Joaquin leading Shelbyville by a 16-0 score.

Another score by Shahan, with 6:40 left in the third quarter, gave JHS a 23-0 lead, after Bravo kicked the extra point through.

The final touchdown of the night was made when Connor Bragg raced into the endzone from 47 yards to score with 7:25 left in the game. Trenton Ramsey tacked on a 2-point conversion run for the final points of the contest.

The Rams did not just control the scoreboard. They led the Dragons in rushing by carrying the football 25 times for 362 yards, as opposed to Shelbyville’s 27 carries for 39 yards. Joaquin completed 3 of 5 passes for 64 yards. Joaquin led in first downs gained 12-2. The Rams were penalized 6 times for 55 yards. Shelbyville had 5 miscues which costed them 30 yards.

September 10,  2018 - In March 2018, hundreds of boys started a normal baseball season with Dixie Youth Baseball. Home runs, base hits, strikeouts, lots of sweat and maybe even a few tears. For 12 local boys, this season was especially spectacular.

They started the season on separate teams and played against each other. When the regular season ended, they came together to form the Center 12U All Stars. After a couple of weeks of practice, they competed here in Center at the District Level. They went undefeated in a Round Robin district tournament. From there, they went on to compete at the state level in Athens, Texas. Through some extremely long innings and lightning delays, they came out on top with only one loss in the State Tournament. This championship qualified this team of Center boys for the Dixie Youth Majors World Series in Lumberton, North Carolina to compete with 10 other states. This team had about two weeks to raise funds to help cover the expenses that would incur.

That’s where the magic happened! Our community rose up and rallied behind these boys and gave in so many ways! In the way of road blocks, concession stands, raffle tickets, donations and most importantly, love and prayers, blessings were poured out on these awesome kids!

Thank you seems so small! Nonetheless, thank you Shelby County! We are so appreciative and we had so much fun playing baseball and representing Texas!

Thank you to our sponsors! OMNI Energy Services, Common Disposal, Center Tire, Paul Parker, Texas State Bank, Wilco Logging, Wiggins Farms, Center Noon Lions Club, and Tammy Steptoe Realty.

Thank you to all who bought raffle tickets and gave in any way! Big or small, you helped us get there and we pray God blesses your generosity!

Team members are Dallas Whiteside, Connor Henson, Lance Wilburn, Debraylon Moore, Jaxon Parker, Trent Jefferson, Danny Gonzalez, Bryson Dowling, Zayne Hennigan, Kayden Dixon, Tayton Binfet, and Colby Lout.

Coaches are Shane Whiteside, Steven Hennigan, and Wendy Wilburn.
