December 19, 2016 Shelbyville Dragons Gymnasium - The Shelbyville Lady Dragons improved their 2016-17 season record to 1-5 with a 57-31 home-court win over the San Augustine Lady Wolves on Friday night.
Leading scorer for the Lady Dragons was Bailey Rabalais who had 21 points on the night and scored nine points in the third quarter alone.
Shelbyville never trailed and led 16-8 at the end of the first period of play. The Lady Dragons defense was able to hold the Lady Wolves to just three points in the second stanza. This allowed Shelbyville to take a 29-11 lead into the locker room at the midway break.
Shelbyville was able to get seven steals in the third period and this helped them outpace San Augustine and take a 42-21 advantage in to the final period of play.
SHS scored 15 points in the final stanza while they held the Lady Wolves to ten points using aggressive defense and slowing their own offensive pace at times.
The Lady Dragons will next play Hull-Daisetta at 8 p.m., at a neutral site, which is not yet named on either school’s website or Maxpreps.
December 17, 2016 Shelbyville Dragons Gymnasium – The Shelbyville Dragons Varsity Basketball Team boosted their 2016-17 record to 10-2 with a convincing 59-38 win over the West Sabine Tigers (4-8) last Friday. The Junior Varsity boys won by a similar score of 59-39.
During varsity play, early 3-pointers by Dragons Ryan Bailey and Corey Bearden, and a tip-in by Jacovian Buckley, helped SHS go up 15-6 by the conclusion of the first period.
Jordan Boykins hit a 3-pointer to start the second stanza and gave Shelbyville 18-6 lead with 7:44 remaining before halftime. SHS ultimately outscored the Tigers 11-10 in the second period and took a 26-16 lead into the locker room at the midway break.
Boykins hit a 3-pointer to put Shelbyville up 29-16 at the beginning of the second half but Tiger Blake Ponder countered with a 3-pointer of his own, just moments later, to pull WSHS to within 19-29 with 7:11 left in the third period. Three buckets by Bearden later in the third stanza helped Shelbyville gain a 42-26 lead going into the final quarter of play.
Twelve points by Boykins in the final period helped the Dragons pull away to the 21-point victory. Boykins, a 6’3” freshman, led the Dragons with 23 points during the night.
The Dragons Varsity will play the Wolves at San Augustine High School on December 20, at 7 p.m.
December 16, 2016 - This fall Center had its first soccer season. With the help of so many volunteers and parents, it was a successful season.
On behalf of the 13U champions, The Tornadoes, Coaches Sergio Rodriguez and Kevin Jones would like to thank everyone who helped and participated in making this a great first season. A special thank you goes to Jason Mitchell for setting up the teams and getting things going to have a soccer organization in Center.
We look forward to growing interest in soccer in Center and having many more soccer seasons! Congratulations Tornadoes and the other team champions.
December 15, 2016 Center Roughriders Gymnasium – The Center Lady Roughriders varsity basketball team fell the visiting Huntington Lady Red Devils last Tuesday by a lopsided 57-35 score. Center fell behind 19-7 early in the second period and found themselves down 25-13 at the midway intermission.
Scores by Lady ‘Riders LaJada Hicks and Malaisha Cartwright helped CHS pull to within 31-14 of Huntington but key scores by Hannah Flynt helped HHS hold a 39-26 advantage going into the final period.
Huntington boosted their lead to 20 points and led 49-29 with 3:33 left in the contest. Center got scores late from Jakayla Weathered and Taylor Nichols but it was a case of too-little-too-late, as Huntington ultimately took away the win with a 57-35 scoring advantage.
The Lady Roughriders will play the Joaquin Lady Rams at Joaquin Rams Gymnasium, next Monday December 19, at 10 a.m.
December 14, 2016 Joaquin ISD - On Wednesday, December 14, Hana Bonner a senior student at Joaquin High School, signed a letter of intent to play softball at Louisiana College at Pineville. Bonner is a four year letterman and excels at sports including softball, basketball, track and weightlifting. She played third base last season but is versatile and capable of playing many positions.
Joaquin Athletic Director, Stephen McCann commended Bonner for her hard work and God-given talents. Many of her peers, including members of her family, were on hand to cheer her on for her many athletic achievements.
Louisiana College teams participate as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III. The Lady Wildcats softball team finished with an 18-23 record last season. They went on an early 8-game winning streak in February and finished the regular season with a 7-game losing streak. The Wildcats are a member of the American Southwest Conference. Women's sports at LC Pineville include basketball, cross country, soccer, softball and tennis.
Bonner still has her senior year at Joaquin ISD to hone her skills and to build on an already impressive athletic resume.
Center Roughriders Gymnasium – The Center Roughriders varsity basketball team gained a 4-3 advantage, with 3:30 left in the first quarter of Tuesday’s game, in route to defeating Huntington High School. The ‘Riders led the remainder of the contest and won the non-district contest by a lopsided 78-21 final score.
Center held a 13-8 lead after the conclusion of the first quarter and 33-10 at the midway break. Center at one point spooled off 19 unanswered points and led 46-10 with 4:30 left in the third quarter. CHS led 63-19 at the end of the third period.
The ‘Riders outscored Huntington 15-2 in the final stanza and took away the 78-21 home-court win.
The ‘Riders were led by Jaterious Evans who scored 17 points and had 5 steals. Octavius Evans scored 12 points and had 7 steals and 7 rebounds. Teammate Kyle Parks scored 9 points and picked up three boards.
The ‘Riders have now boosted their season record to 12-3. Conference action will begin on January 13.
The Roughriders will next travel to Jacksonville Friday, December 16 for non-conference ninth grade, junior varsity, and varsity boys’ basketball action beginning at 5 p.m.
December 8, 2016 - Ana Oliveira, a sophomore Panola College outside hitter from Sao Paulo, Brazil, has been named a 1st Team All-American selection by both the NJCAA and the AVCA. In addition to these two latest honors, Oliveira earned Most Valuable Player of the Lee College Invitational earlier this season and then was voted Player of the Year for Region XIV-North along with 1st Team All-Conference last month.
Oliveira played an integral role in the success of the 2016 Fillies Volleyball season: 35-4 overall record, #1 national ranking for three straight weeks, and a 7th Place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament. She led the team in kills and was an all-around threat prior to a knee injury she suffered in October that sidelined her for six matches and limited her to back row only in the regional and national tournaments.
Even in an extremely balanced offense that saw six Panola hitters named All-Conference this season, Oliveira tallied double-digit kills in 15 of the 25 matches played prior to her injury, 9 or more digs in 13 of those matches, and was leading the team with a .338 hitting clip. She also hit .300 or better in 16 matches, including .436 during a 20-kill performance against Navarro, an impressive feat for an outside hitter. Making her presence known in all areas of the game, Oliveira also finished with 57 total blocks and a team-leading 33 aces on the year to go along with 307 total digs.
As a freshman, Oliveira led the team with 41 service aces, finished second on the team in kills with 829, and finished third in digs with 374. She posted double-digit kills 12 times, including a season high of 21 on .415 hitting against Seward County. Her performance last season earned her a spot on the 2015 Region XIV All-Tournament Team to go along with 2nd Team All-Conference recognition.
With this achievement, Oliveira joins elite company of Fillies Volleyball student-athletes named to All-American teams during their Panola College tenure, becoming just the fifth player to earn the program's sixth accolade. She joins Josie Santos (2010-2012) as only the second player in program history to earn 1st Team honors and also the only Panola players to be recognized as All-American by both the NJCAA and the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association).

Tenaha High Schools’ SEC - On Tuesday night the Joaquin Lady Rams traveled west on Highway 84 to take on neighboring Tenaha High School’s Lady Tigers in each varsity basketball team’s first District 22 2A contest of the season. The Lady Tigers’, coached by Gary Davison, came in with a 3-0 pre-district record and are currently the state’s #1 ranked program. The Lady Rams, coached by Carrie Obregon, came into the contest with an unblemished 7-0 record.
The evening’s event started with junior varsity action. The Lady Tigers pulled away from Joaquin and built a 32-10 lead by the end of the third quarter. By midway of the final period the THS JV had ballooned their lead up to 42-14. The game ended will the Lady Tigers gaining an impressive 46-18 win.
The varsity game started out defensive and Joaquin struck first when Day’za Lane scored on a backdoor pass which put the Lady Rams up 2-0 with 6:12 left in the first stanza.
Tenaha held Joaquin scoreless for the remainder of the period while gaining scores from Lady Tigers Shayla Parks, Calicia Roland, Brooke McClure, Bianca Davison, and Arlicia Roland. Tenaha took an 11-2 advantage into the second stanza.
The Lady Tigers were able to again out-score Joaquin again in the second period, by an 11-5 advantage, giving themselves a 22-7 lead at the halftime intermission.
Eboni Adams and Hana Bonner each scored four points for the Lady Rams during the third period but Tenahas, Davison got hot and scored 11 points during the frame. This helped THS get a 15-8 scoring advantage during the frame. Tenaha led 37-15 going into the final period of play.
Joaquins’ Desere’ Cooper scored 3-points, after sinking an 'And-1' free throw with 5:50 left in the game, to bring JHS to within 37-18. Bonner, Eboni Adams, Eric Davis, and Lane put Joaquin on a scoring run which cut the Lady Tigers lead to 39-26 with three minutes left in the contest.
Tenaha was able to stiffen their defense and scored the last five points of the game and they ultimately took away a 44-26 win. Tenaha is now 5-0 and have a 1-0 conference mark. They will play the Lady Wolves, at 5:00 p.m., on Tuesday, December 13, in San Augustine.
The Lady Rams are now 7-1, (0-1). They have an away tournament game at Bloomburg High School on Thursday, December 8 at 2:10 pm.
December 5, 2016 - Bryan Texas – Both Tenaha and Bremond High Schools entered Friday night’s Class 2A Division II Region III Final football game, at Cougar Stadium in College Station, with identical 13-0 records but only the #1 ranked Bremond Tigers came away with their record unblemished. #4 Tenaha suffered their first blemish of the season with a 31-7 loss. Bremond hasn’t lost since 2013 when Tenaha defeated, the defending state champions, 45 games ago by a 24-7 margin, in the playoffs.
Tenahas’ defense held Bremond scoreless on its first three drives, forced a punt, and took over on downs with two big fourth-down stops.
Tenaha took a 7-0 lead when running back Christian Ashton scored early in the first period on a 44-yard touchdown run.
Bremond’s Paul Rykendria intercepted a THS pass, late in the first stanza, and BHS quarterback Reshoud Paul was able to help the BHS Tigers even the game’s score at 7-7, with a 14-yard score with 2:41 left in the opening period.
The score was the first points Tenaha’s defense had given up in 13 quarters of playoff football. Tenaha had scored 202 points in their final three district games.
Bremond went up 14-7 with 6:50 to go in the first half when Paul scored again on 6-yard touchdown run. The play capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive that saw Paul carry 11 times during heavy rain.
The next drive saw Trai Gardner take a direct snap and run 56 yards to the Bremond 15. But THS Tiger’s drive stalled after a false start penalty. Tenaha tried for an Abel Rodriguez field goal, which sailed wide.
Bremond gained a 17-7 advantage with 2:47 left in the half with a 32-yard field goal by Gerardo Ponce. Bremond had a first-and-goal on the Tenaha 3, but Tenaha's defense recorded two sacks and pushed Bremond back to a fourth-and-goal on the 15.
In third period, a Tenaha fumble gave Bremond the ball on the Tenaha 25. Paul, a Texas A&M signee, later scored from 1-yard out to push the score to 24-7 with just seconds left in the third period.
Paul scored his fourth, and final, touchdown of the game with 8:02 to go in the game. This propelled Bremond ahead 31-7. This also proved to be the game’s final score.
Bremond held THS to 103 rushing yards on the night. Paul alone had 274 yards rushing on 44 carries.
Bremond now advances to face Burton in next week’s state semi-final.
Tenaha returns over two dozen lettermen and will lose 8 senior players from this year’s roster.
