November 1, 2016 - Joaquin Rams Varsity Baseball, pitcher and middle-infielder, Brock Lawson has signed a national letter of intent to play baseball at Panola Junior College, of Carthage, next season. Lawson still has this season to prepare while playing varsity high school baseball at Joaquin under the guidance of his older brother, Rams Head Coach Wade Lawson, and his father, Assistant Coach Mike Lawson. Rams baseball has been a tradition with the Lawsons as Brock’s brothers, Matt, Lance, and Wade, played varsity baseball and other sports as well.

Brock was the Rams’ pitching ace last year and played middle infield when not on the mound. He has played with the Rams varsity program throughout his varsity career.

Lawson’s athletic teammates made an appearance at the signing to support their teammate.

Panola Ponies Head Baseball Coach Todd Shelton personally came to the presentation for the signing of the intention document.

The Ponies have several area players already including Centers’ Taylor Tomlin, Carthages’ Blaine Tomlin, Jared Blissett and Cole Clinton, and Beckvilles’ John M. Bounds.

Wade Lawson stated during the ceremony: “This won’t be the last time we gather for a signing. This is what we work hard for here.” 

November 1, 2016 - The Youth Football Championship games were played Saturday, October 29th in Shelbyville and the Joaquin Bronocs (6-7 Flag Team) won the Flag Division Championship beating Shelbyville Black, 14-7. The team had a perfect season of 8 wins, 0 losses. The Broncos are coached by Chrisco Bragg and Cody Gianunzio. Team members are Cooper Bragg (#3), Hunter Harris (#21), Cayden Haessly (#14), Carter Graves (#5), Jordan Gianunzio (#99), Uriyah Floyd (#7), Mason Fults (#47), Morgan Doggett (#12), and Trenton Runnels (#56).

The Joaquin 12U Tackle won their Division Championship beating out the Beckville Bearcats 16-13. The team fell to the Bearcats during the season but came through during the Championship for the win. The 12U team is coached by Chrisco Bragg, Michael Gatlin, Jesse Griffin, and Kelly Brooks. Keanna Osby State Cross Country QualiferOctober 31, 2016 - Congratulations Shelbyville Lady Dragons Cross Country!

Keanna Osby finished 5th at the Regional Cross Country meet this weekend to advance to State.  She is a Junior and this will be her 3rd trip to State.  The competition is Nov. 12, 2016 in Round Rock, TX  at Old Settlers Park.  2A girls will run at 1:30 pm. We are Dragon Proud!

October 31, 2016 - The Tenaha crosss country teams competed in the Region 3 Championships at Sam Houston State. The girls team finished 7th overall and the boys team placed 11th.

Senior, Carlos Bustamante, qualified for the State Championship as an individual runner.

October 28, 2016 - The inaugural Shelby County Soccer League kicked off their season of Saturday, October 15, 2016 with 14 teams divided into three age groups.

The 6 under teams are Barcelona FC, Dynamo, Eagles, and Man U. The largest age group with six teams are the 10 under and they are Dynamo, FC Seattle, Lil Timberz, Pumas, Texas Longhorns, and Tigers. The 13 under teams are Dynamo, FC Dallas, Tigers, and Tornadoes.

The next game day is this Saturday, October 29 with the first game at 9am. (Season Schedule)

October 24, 2016 - Sneaky Cleats 04 - Pride took first place in the Pink Out/Spooktacular fastpitch tournament in Forney, TX this past weekend, October 22nd and 23rd scoring 50 runs and not allowing any runs (ZERO) from their opponents.

They played in this "Pink Out" tournament for breast cancer awareness honoring one of their own team's mom who is fighting breast cancer currently. The girls wanted to win this for her and they gave the big championship trophy to Kim Jones, mother to Makaiya Hubbard, of Center, in her honor, with their love, prayers and support during her fight to win.

October 23, 2016 – Album - The Tenaha Tigers varsity football team held the Grapeland Sandies to a net 36 yards of offense, last Saturday, on the way to a lopsided 48-0 2016 Homecoming win, at newly named Raymond Jackson Stadium, at Tenaha ISD.

Trai Gardner began the scoring, at the 6:38 mark of the first quarter, with a 55-yard touchdown run. The score capped an 89-yard drive on the Tiger’s first possession. Moments later, Tiger teammate Cody Foshee intercepted a Sandie pass and returned it for a touchdown which helped give Tenaha a 13-0 lead with 5:32 left in the first period.

Gardner scored his second touchdown on an 11-yard reception with 6:44 remaining in the first half. An Abel Rodriguez extra point kick boosted Tenahas’ lead to 20-0. This score held up until the midway intermission.

At halftime Junior Jaden Washington was recognized as Tenahas 2016 Homecoming Queen. Before the game Tenaha alumnist, and current Grapevine Head Football Coach, Randy Jackson, and Tenaha ISD Principal Terry Bolin were recognized as Tenaha ISD Hall of Honor members. 

Jaqualin Franks intercepted a pass and scored from 60 yards out at the start of the second half and Tenaha’s lead grew to 27-0 with over 11 minutes left in the third frame. Chase Lilly later returned an interception 30 yards for a Tigers score which gave THS a 34-0 advantage with 6:50 left in the third stanza.

 

Gardner returned an interception 41 yards for a Tigers touchdown during the Sandie’s next possession and THS took a 41-0 advantage into the final period of play.

In the fourth period, Onterio Thompson scored a 22-yard rushing touchdown which proved to be the game’s final score

The Tigers rushed for 164 yards and passed for146 yards for 310 total yards of offense. They accumulated 9 first downs had two fumbles and an interception. Tenaha was assessed 25 yards on 3 penalties.

Grapeland had -15 yards rushing and 51 yards passing, for 36 net yards of offense. They threw 4 interceptions. The Sandies made 3 first downs and had 3 penalties for 20 yards.

The Tigers are now 8-0 overall and have a 3-0 District 11 2A-2 record. The Tigers have not lost a district football game since 2008. THS will travel to Overton next Friday, October28 to face the Mustangs at 7 p.m. Overton beat Timpson on the road, last Friday, by a 31-21 score. Overton is 6-1 on the season an also posts an unblemished 3-0 conference mark.

October 22, 2016 – The Timpson Bears varsity football team dropped Friday’s District 11 2A-2 game with the visiting Overton Mustangs by a 31-21 score. Overton never trailed but had to stave off two Bears comeback attempts.

Overton deferred the opening possession and kicked the ball to the Bears after winning the coin toss. Timpson started their first possession at their own 35 yard line. Jordan Osby gained Timpson’s initial first down with a 13-yard run which took the ball down near midfield. A 9-yard sack by Overton’s Darius Herndon set Timpson back into a second-down-and 19 yards to go situation and ultimately forced the Bears into punting the ball to the Mustangs. After a 41-yard Joe Clark punt return, OHS used just three plays to score the game’s first touchdown. Jacob Marshall capped the drive with an 8-yard keeper for the score. The Mustang’s extra point kick was good and the Mustangs led 7-0 with 8:01 left in the first period.

Timpson’s Jordan Osby returned the Overton kickoff 40 yards to set the Bears offense up at the Overton 48 yard line to start the Bears’ second drive. On second down Osby raced 48 yards for the Bears first score. Timpson’s extra point kick attempt missed and THS trailed 6-7 with 6:57 left in the first quarter.

The Bears defense stopped OHS on their next offensive drive, but with ten minutes remaining in the second quarter, Overton got their second touchdown, on a 14-yard run by fullback Hudson Rogers, and the Mustangs took a 13-6 lead. With just 32 seconds left in the first half, Marshall found Nicolas Croteau in the corner of the end zone on a swing pass and OHS took a 19-6 lead into to locker room at halftime.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Overton took a 25-6 lead on a three play, 55-yard scoring drive, capped with a 4-yard quarterback keeper run by Marshall with 10:03 remaining in the third stanza.

Timpson answered back with a nine play scoring drive of their own which was capped with a 3-yard Osby touchdown run for the score with 5:17 left in the third frame. This pulled THS to within 13-25 of Overton.

Overton extended their lead to 31-13 with another Croteau touchdown reception with 5:09 left in the game.

Timpson again fought back to pull to within 21-31 after Osby covered 71 yards in two plays, and scored on a 42-yard break-away run for a touchdown, and ran in a 2-point conversion, with 4:48 left to play. This proved to be the game’s final score.

Overton rushed for 284 yards and Timpson ran for 237. The Mustangs completed 9 passes on 13 attempts for 88 yards. Timpson completed 1 pass on 4 attempts for 16 yards. Timpson lost a fumble with 4:35 remaining in the first period and threw an interception at the end of the first half. OHS had no turnovers. Timpson held the advantage in penalty yardage with 0 yards assessed on one declined penaly, Overton was penalized for 40 yards on 4 miscues. The Mustangs had 372 total yards of offense, while the Bears totaled 253.

The Bears will next host the Mount Enterprise Wildacats at Timpson’s John Hebert Eakin Stadium, next Friday, October 28 at 7 p.m. The Wildcats are 1-7 and lost to Wortham 47-14 last Friday at home. MEHS is 0-3 in District 11 2A competition.
