Tenaha Tigers Gymnasium on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 –

Tenaha's Holiday Hoops Classic Invitational Basketball Tournament is now underway. Shelby County Today has been able to catch three of our county’s 5 participating teams in action.

The Tenaha Tigers Boys varsity team defeated the Zavalla Eagle by a 78-22 score after jumping out to a 23-0 lead midway through the first period. The opening frame ended with THS holding a convincing 40-4 lead. The Tigers were up 55-11 at the midway intermission. The end of the third stanza saw Tenaha ahead 67-19 going into the final period.

The Tigers were led by Kamarion Ross with 24 points. THS teammates also in double figures were Brikelian Kennedy with 17, Ja’Torian Moore and Kajavion Ross each scored 13.

The Joaquin Lady Rams defeated the Flatonia Lady Bulldogs by a 49-43 score in a game which was close and hard-fought throughout it’s entirety. Joaquin led 13-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs fought back in the second period and took a 30-20 lead into the lockerroom at the midway break.

Joaquin outpaced FHS 15-4 points in the third frame and JHS led 35-34 going into the fourth quarter. Joaquin outscored the Lady Bulldogs 14-9 points in the final quarter to earn the 49-43 win.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Summer Sodeck with 27 points. Joaquin was led by Ellie Anglin with 19 and Juli King with ten points.

The Shelbyville Dragons varsity boys team defeated the Huntington Red Devils by a 62-48 score. They led the Red Devils 28-23 at halftime, 44-39 points at the end of the third stanza and 62-48 at game’s end.

December 22, 2022 - The 13th Annual Tenaha ISD Longview Orthopaedic Holiday Hoops Classic starts December 27 and is three days of high paced action.

This year 39 teams from all across the Lone Star State will join us December 27-29 at 4 premiere high school gymnasiums and Panola College for the best 2A & 3A Basketball action in the State!!

Games will begin at 9am daily at each location (Tenaha Special Events Center, Tenaha ISD Tiger Gym, Timpson ISD Special Event Center, Joaquin High School and Panola College) and will have games throughout the day per the brackets - Girls, Boys.

Games will wrap up at the Tenaha ISD Special Events Center each evening with great entertainment and giveaways by Longview Orthopaedic partners.

The famous Tiger Cafe' will be open each and every day at Tenaha High School serving the same delicious food you have come to expect from the Holiday Hoops Classic - Lunch Menu will be available daily from 11-2pm and Dinner Menu will begin at 4:30-8:30 nightly.

Center Roughriders Gymnasium on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 –

The Center Roughriders varsity basketball team took a 44-36 home win over the Chapel Hill Bulldogs on Tuesday. The win was Center’s District 17 4A opener and gives them a 10-3 overall season mark.

Center held a narrow 4-3 lead midway through the first period but fell behind 12-7 points to the Bulldogs by the end of the first quarter. The ‘Riders outscored the ‘Dogs 12-6 in the second period and Center led 19-18 at the midway break.

Chapel Hill fought their way back and tied the game at 29-29 by the end of the third stanza. A hard-fighting Roughrider defense proved to be the difference as they capitalized on seven Bulldogs turnovers while Center outpaced CHHS by a 15-7 point margin during the final frame to take the 44-36 win.

The Roughriders were led by Mar Mar Evans with 14 points. The Bulldogs saw Lee Preston produce with a game high 17 points.

Center will travel to Franklin High School on December 27, 2022 for a tournament game next Tuesday.

Center Roughriders Gymnasium on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 –

The Center Lady Roughriders varsity basketball team fell to the Lady Bulldogs from Chapel Hill High School by a 60-43 score on Tuesday. The game was Center’s second District 17 4A contest and they have an 0-2 mark now. Their overall record stands at 1-8 this season.

The game was close, and low-scoring early, as the two teams were knotted at 4-4 points at the midway point of the first period. The Lady Bulldogs went on a run moments later and they led 19-6 by the end of the opening stanza.

Chapel Hill outpaced Center 17 points to 11 in the second quarter and they took a 36-15 lead into the halftime intermission.

CHHS was able to gain ground during the third quarter by outscoring Center 17-14 and they took a 53-29 advantage into the fourth quarter of play.

Center outscored CHHS by a 14-7point differential in the final period but the Lady Bulldogs ultimately came away with the 60-43 win. The Lady Bulldogs are 11-5 overall and 2-0 in District 17 conference action. Center was led by Lanaijha Johnson with 16 points and Kylie Hubbard with 11. The Lady Bulldogs were led by Kya Cook with 17.

Center will travel to Union Grove High School on Friday, December 30, 2022 to begin tournament play at 3 p.m.

Shelbyville Dragons Gymnasium on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 –

The Joaquin Lady Rams varsity basketball team got a District 23 2A opening win over the Shelbyville Lady Dragons by a 23-12 score. The win gave Joaquin an 8-7 overall win-loss mark. Shelbyville has a 5-9 season mark and they are 0-1 in the conference.

Scoring got off to a slow start as Joaquin held a 3-1 lead over Shelbyville midway through the first period. The Lady Rams went up 6-3 at the end of the opening quarter.

Joaquin outpaced Shelbyville 6-4 points during the second stanza and they took a 12-7 lead into the lockerroom at the midway intermission.

The Lady Rams led 20-10 by the end of the third frame and narrowly outscored SHS 3-2 points in the final period to take the 23-12 win.

Joaquin will host the 16-2 Tenaha Lady Tigers at Rams Gymnasium on Friday, December 16 at 6:30 p.m. Tenaha defeated the visiting Beckville Bearcats by a 94-27 score during their District 23 opener on Wednesday.

Shelbyville will travel to Gary Bobcats Gymnasium to face the (6-7) Lady Bobcats on Friday, December 16 at 5 p.m. This game will be Gary’s first district contest.

Tenaha Special Events Center on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 –

The Tenaha Lady Tigers varsity basketball team opened District 23 2A play with a convincing 94-27 home win over the Beckville Lady Bearcats. The Lady Tigers season mark stands at 16-2.

Tenaha jumped out early and led 28-4 by the conclusion of the first quarter. They built a lopsided 57-14 advantage by the halftime intermission.

Leading the offensive for the lady Tigers was junior Kayanna Cox with 43 points on the night. Teammates in double figures for THS were junior Tiyanna Dagley with 16 points and senior McKaden Reynolds with 11 points. Senior Amber Harris led Beckville with 9 points on the day.

The Lady Tigers will travel to Joaquin on Friday, December 16, 2022 for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff at Rams Gymnasium. The Lady Rams defeated Shelbyville at Dragons Gymnasium by a 23-12 score for their first district win. Joaquin is 8-7 overall this season.

December 14, 2022 - Center's AD and Chapel Hill's AD have confirmed that we will begin basketball games at 12 noon on Tuesday, December 20, 2022. Officials will be assigned for all the games. They will be played in this order: 9th boys, JVG, JVB, VG, VB. All games will be played in the CHS gym.
