The Timpson Bears 2022 Varsity Football season fell just one game short of the state championship game when they lost by a 24-21 score to the Refugio Bobcats (14-1), on Thursday, during the Texas Class 2A Division 1 State Football Semifinals. Timpson's record finished at 14-1 this season. The Bears and coach Kerry Therwhanger's staff have a combined 40-3 record and a school record three state football semifinal appearances for the past three seasons.

Neither team scored during a hard-fought defensive first quarter of play. On the first play from scrimmage of the second period Bear's junior quarterback Terry Bussey ran on a sweep around the right side 85-yards for a touchdown with 11:48 remaining. Tyler Lane added an extra point conversion kick and Timpson led 7-0. Moments later Amare Bruton recovered a onside kick near midfield to give THS possession of the football once more. Bussey hit Bruton for a 49-yard reception which went for a touchdown and gave the Bears a 14-0 advantage after another Lane kick with 10:49 minutes left in the first half.

Refugio answered when senior quarterback Caleb Hesseltine hit junior wideout Ernest Campbell for a 13-yard touchdown reception. Bobcat Jordan King added an extra point kick to cut Timpson's lead to 14-7 with 7:16 left in the second stanza. Hesseltine hit Campbell for another score with just 1:24 left before the midway break and the game was tied 14-14 at the intermission.

Bussey scored a 75-yard touchdown to start the second half and helped give the Bears a 21-14 advantage with 11 :46 left in the third quarter. Each team held the other in check for the remainder of the third period.

The fourth quarter saw Refugio tie the game at 21-21 on a 3-yard Jordan King run with 7:43 left in the game. A 24-yard field goal by Alex Placencia in the final seconds proved to be the difference as Refugio took the 24-21 win and they move on to the finals. The Timpson Bears varsity football team took a convincing 34-13 Texas State UIL Quarterfinals win over the Cooper Bulldogs on Friday at Lindale Eagles Stadium.

The Bears trailed early after Cooper started strong with a 14-play 76-yard scoring drive which concluded with a 4-yard touchdown run by Canon Ingram. An extra point kick by Sean Patel gave the Bulldogs a 7-0 advantage at the 6:13 minute mark of the first quarter of play.

The second period saw the Bears drive 72-yards to score on an offensive drive capped with a Terry Bussey 13-yard touchdown which cut the Bulldogs lead to 7-6 after a failed extra point kick attempt, with 9:39 left in the second frame. Bulldog Markell Smith gave CHS good field position when he returned the ensuing kickoff into Bear’s territory at the 45-yardline. Cooper began to drive the football but Timpson reclaimed the pigskin when Ja’Cayden Adams and Jacorian Grace sacked the ‘Dogs quarterback forcing them to turnover the ball on downs with 8 minutes left in the first half.

Bussey hit Bears receiver Colton Carroll on Timpson’s next drive to set themselves up with first-and-goal at the 3-yardline with 8 minutes left in the second stanza. Bussey scored a touchdown moments later with a lot of help from the Bears linemen getting a huge push. Tyler Lane added an extra point kick and THS took a 13-7 lead with 5:37 left. This score held up throughout the remainder of the second period.

The only score of the third quarter came when Bussey broke free around the end for a 29-yard touchdown run with 10:20 remaining. Lane added another extra point kick to give the Bears a 20-7 lead.

The Bears narrowly missed a 27-yard field goal with 5 minutes left in the third stanza but it sailed just wide of the right goalpost.

The fourth frame saw Cooper gain their final score when Patel scored on a 4-yard run to cut Timpson’s lead to 20-13 with 9:35 left in the contest.

Bussey helped give THS breathing room when he hit Vosky Howard for a 27-yard scoring strike with 6:59 remaining to give the Bears a 27-13 lead. Bussey later scored the game’s final touchdown with a 1-yard keeper run for a touchdown which gave THS the final 34-13 lead after another Lane extra point kick with 2:56 remaining.

Timpson, now 14-0, will move on to face the Refugio Bobcats (13-1) in the State Semifinal round at Cypress Berry Center Stadium on Thursday, December 8, 2022 at 6 p.m. The Stadium is at 8877 Barker Cypress Road, Cypress Texas 77433.
