Joaquin Rams Gymnasium, Friday, January 3, 2010 –
The Tenaha Tigers varsity boy’s and girl’s teams each took District 22A Class 2A wins at Joaquin on Friday January 3, 2020.
The Lady Tigers and Lady Rams fought hard in a close game until Tenaha began to pull away late in the third period. Tenaha eventually took away a 42-32 conference win.
The boy’s varsity matchup between the Tigers and Rams got away from the Rams early. By game’s end Tenaha had taken their first district win of the season by an 84-28 score.
Joaquin will travel to San Augustine next Tuesday, January 7, 2020 for their next conference matchup. Tipoff begins at 4:30 p.m. for junior varsity, with varsity play following.
Tenaha will host Timpson next Tuesday with sub-varsity tipping off at 4:30 p.m.
January 2, 2020 - Three outstanding individuals earned the honor of being 2019 Holiday Hoops Hall of Honor Inductees. They are:
2019 Holiday Hoops Hall of Honor Inductee is Lipan Indians’ Coach Brent Gaylor.
“Coachin’ ‘em up.” That’s perhaps the best way to describe the four year championship run of the Lipan Indians under the tutelage of Coach Brent Gaylor. To win the Tenaha Holiday Hoops Tournament one time is hard enough, but to bring four different teams, and to beat four different opponents, four years in a row - that’s Hall of Fame worthy. Championship runs come and go in the sports business, but it is rare for a program to truly max those runs out; Lipan most certainly has. To go along with four Holiday Hoops titles are two hard fought Class A State Championships. These are not easy things to accomplish. Coach Gaylor’s style is best described as cerebral. If there is a defense out there Coach Gaylor has set to beat it. Gaylor joins Kountze’s Duane Joubert as the only coaches with at least four Holiday Hoops title.
2019 Holiday Hoops Hall of Honor Inductee is also Te’Aire Hambrick, LaPoynor Flyerettes 2014-2017.
Wow… that’s literally the only word to describe Te’Aire Hambrick’s career for LaPoynor. At Holiday Hoops, Hambrick burst onto the scene in perhaps the most memorable Girls’ title game ever, when she and Lanie Roberts went toe-to-toe. On that day, Lanie would get the make, and Te’Aire would have a tough miss and have to settle for 2nd. But over her career, Te’Aire did not have to settle for 2nd very often The very next year, the Flyerettes returned and won the crystal bowl trophy, and for herself, the Tournament MVP. Over her four year career Te’Aire would lead LaPoynor to a tourney trophy at Holiday Hoops every year and made All-Tournament each time. She also would go on to be a thorn in the side of the Tenaha Lady Tigers on the big stage by helping LaPoynor defeat Tenaha twice in the Regional Final before going on to state in San Antonio.
2019 Holiday Hoops Hall of Honor Inductee is Martin Mill’s Lady Mustang, Abie Orrick 2016-2019.
How do you describe a Hall of Fame player who rarely was her team’s leading scorer? Abbie Orrick, that’s how. If there was ever a “do what it takes” player to play in the Tenaha’s Special Events Center it was the gritty and tough center piece of the latest run of championships in the Martin’s Mill era. A ball handler when she has to, always willing to guard the opponent’s toughest player and shut them down, a relentless rebounder, and oh yeah… occasionally she might just bury a three pointer if she’s not drawing free throws on her way to the hoop. The Lady Mustang program has long been known for its intensity and pace. But Orrick, like many before her, served as the anchor for Martin’s Mill Championship toughness. In her first three trips to Holiday Hoops, Orrick helped lead the Mustangs to three Championships and has been named All-Tournament or MVP each year she has participated. The Lady Mustangs are sure to have multiple Inductees to the Hall, but Orrick has been the lynch pin to our enjoyment watching the Martin’s Mill Championship culture here at Holiday Hoops.
January 2, 2020 - The 11th Annual Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament began December 26, the day after Christmas, and included over 70 games played in three days in five great venues.

Tenaha High School, Saturday, December 26, 2019 –
Saturday saw local and other Texas high school basketball teams compete in final round action at Tenaha’s 11th Annual Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament.
The finale for the tournament was the girl’s and boy’s tournament championships. Girl’s action saw Martin’s Mill’s get their 100th consecutive win and the Holiday Hoops title by defeating the Edgewood Lady Bulldogs by a 49-25 score. This game was preceded by a third-place tournament playoff with local girl’s teams from Tenaha and Timpson. The Timpson Lady Bears came away with this game by taking a 52-25 victory over the Lady Tigers.
The Boy’s Title game between the Shelbyville Dragons and the Little River Academy Bees went the Bees way as they fought off a Shelbyville comeback to come away with the title trophy and win by a score of 62-60. Earlier third round boy’s play saw the hometown Tenaha Tigers take the third-place title by defeating the Tatum Eagles by a 77-55 margin.
Forty Texas high school basketball teams competed in this year’s tourney which started on Thursday and ran through Saturday.
Tenaha High School, Saturday, December 28, 2019 –
Saturday will see local and other Texas high school basketball teams competing in final round action at Tenaha’s Basketball Tournament. Forty Texas high school basketball teams are competing in the Eleventh Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament which started on Thursday and runs through Saturday Night, December 28, 2019.
On Friday evening The Tenaha Tigers Boys Varsity fell to the Little River Academy Bumblebees by a 70-59 final score. Tenaha was on top early and led 19-10 at the end of the first period. The Bee’s bounced back and cut the THS lead to a single point by the halftime intermission where the Tigers led 32-31. Academy took a 10-point lead at 52-42 over Tenaha going into the final quarter. The 11-point win sends Academy into the final. On Saturday night they will square off with the Shelbyville Dragons at the THS Special Events Center at 8 p.m. for the final game of the 3-day tournament.
The Shelbyville Dragons made it to the finals by beating the Tatum Eagles 88-81 in overtime. The Dragons led 19-15 after one quarter and appeared to be taking control when they led 44-31 at halftime. Tatum never quit and chipped away at the SHS lead. The Dragons lead was cut to five points by the end of the third stanza and the Dragons took a 63-58 lead into the final frame. Tatum outscored SHS 19-14 points in the final period to tie things up in the fourth quarter at 77-77. The overtime period saw the Dragons outpace Tatum by a 11-2 margin to take the win. Tatum will now face off with Tenaha at 6:30 p.m. for the third-place game at Tenaha’s SEC.
Two of Shelby County’s local high school girl’s teams Tenaha and Timpson lost their semifinal round games. They will face off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, in the Tenaha SEC for the third-place trophy game. The Tenaha Lady Tigers fell to the Edgewood Lady Bulldogs by a 49-19 score. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-0 point lead early, and a commanding 16-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. They never looked back or trailed.
The Timpson Lady Bears had a similar fate as they trailed the Martin’s Mill Lady Mustangs 18-4 after one quarter of play. By halftime the MMHS lead grew to 30-10. The game saw the Lady Mustangs win 51-31 and head to the tournament final with Edgewood on Saturday at 5 p.m. this afternoon at the Tenaha SEC.
The Tenaha Lady Tigers and Timpson Lady Bears will face off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday for the girl’s third-place trophy game.
Tenaha High School, Friday, December 27, 2019 –
Friday saw local and other Texas high school basketball teams competing in second round action at Tenaha’s Holiday hoops Basketball Tournament.
The Shelbyville Dragons wasted no time getting in front of the Sabine Cardinals and they led 30-19 at the midway break. They outpaced the Cardinals 18-7 points during the third period and took a 48-26 lead into the final period. By game’s end the Dragons had took control with a 62-34 lead at the final buzzer.
The Joaquin and Shelbyville Varsity Girls teams faced off with the Shelbyville Lady Dragons taking a 17-5 lead by the end of the first period. They built a 31-14 advantage by the end of the first half of play. The Lady Dragons outscored Joaquin 16-13 during the third stanza and they led by twenty points at 47-27 going into the fourth and final quarter. They eventually won by 29 points with a 62-33 lead.
The Timpson Bears Boys Varsity team struggled early with the Kountze Lions. The Bears got behind 9-13 midway through the first period and they trailed 13-19 going into the second period. The Bears outpaced the Lions 24-4 during the second quarter and took a 37-23 lead into the locker room at the midway intermission. THS led 65-34 at the conclusion of the third stanza and eventually won by a 77-53 margin.

Forty Texas high school basketball teams are competing in the Eleventh Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament which started today and runs through Saturday Night, December 28, 2019.
Teams from around the state as well as eight local teams are in their opening round of elimination play and some will have second round games as early as this afternoon.
The Tenaha Tigers Junior Varsity shocked a perennial finalist, the Laneville Yellowjackets with a 53-51 overtime win on Thursday morning. The game came down to a last second Debraelyn Cooks shot at the overtime buzzer.
The Shelbyville Lady Dragons went back and forth with the Centerville Lady Tigers in their opening round game. SHS led 23-12 at the end of the first period but saw Centerville take a 34-27 lead by the midway intermission. The Lady Dragons battled back to within one point at 41-42 by the start of the fourth quarter. Centerville outscored Shelbyville 16-8 in the final stanza which gave them a 58-49 win.
The Tenaha Lady Tigers overcame the Lapoynor Lady Flyers by a 54-49 margin. Tenaha led 13-12 at the end of the first period but trailed 20-23 at the hallway point. Tenaha outscored LaPoynor 18-13 in the third stanza and led 38-36 going into the final period. Two jumpers and four free throws in the late stages by Lady Tiger Jonisha Thompson made the difference as THS won by a 54-49 score.
The Tenaha Tigers varsity boys won 79-53 over the White Oak Roughnecks. The Tigers gained a 21-7 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter and they led 47-20 at the midway intermission. Tenaha outscored WOHS 24-13 in the third period to extend their lead to 71-35 going into the fourth quarter.
December 23, 2019 - An Associated Press article released on December 17th listed Center High School football player Keomadre Horace in their Sports Editors Class 4A all-state high school football team picks. Horace received Honorable Mention All-State Running Back recognition.
Junior Keomadre “Red” Horace ended the 2019-2020 season with a total of 2116 rushing yards with an average of 192.4 yards per game, 178 carries with an average of 11.9 yards per carry, 8 times with 100+ rushing yards, and a total of 26 touchdowns. He also had 4 receptions for a total of 55 receiving yards which brings his total all purpose yards to 2171 for the year.

December 18, 2019 - The Joaquin JV / Varsity Basketball games vs. Timpson to be played this Friday, December 20 will start at 4pm instead of 5pm.
Joaquin Rams Gymnasium, Tuesday, December 17, 2019 –
Both the Joaquin Rams and Lady Rams played in varsity basketball games on Tuesday at Joaquin High School. The Lady Rams beat the Lady Pirates from Martinsville by a 33-28 score in their first District 22 2A game of the year. The Rams later fell to the Slocum Mustangs by a 54-40 score in a pre-district matchup.
Riley Sherrod led the Lady Rams with 18 points for the day. Joaquin trailed 10-11 points at the end of the first period and Martinsville led 21-15 at the midway break. Five points on two consecutive drives down court by Sherrod gave JHS a 27-22 lead at the end of the third stanza.
The fourth quarter saw both teams battle to a 6-6 points quarter and Joaquin came away with the 33-28 win.
The Joaquin Boy’s Varsity led the Slocum Mustangs 12-9 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 21-23 at the halftime intermission. The Mustangs went on an offensive run in the third period and led 43-28 going in to the final period of play. Joaquin continued to play hard but made up little ground as they eventually took a 40-54 point loss.
The Rams will host Cumberland Academy on Friday, December 20, 2019 with JV tipping off at 5 p.m. Boy’s Varsity action will follow. The Lady Rams will head to Timpson and face the Lady Bears with JV starting off girl’s action at 5 p.m. The Lady Rams varsity team will tip off afterward.
