May 27, 2018 - As we approach the 150th Anniversary of the first Memorial Day in 1868 that was then called Decoration Day, we remember that 100 years ago World War I was raging in Europe. The United States had joined in the fighting some 13 months earlier on April 6, 1917 and Shelby County, Texas had lost the first six of 34 sons that would die in the service of their country during the World War.
May 24, 2018 - On Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th, 2018 all United States Flags and others flying with should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon. This is in honor of all Americans who have died in the service of our country during a time of war. If you have a flag that cannot be lowered you can show respect for the day by tying a black cord or ribbon to the top of the staff.
May 19, 2018 - A Presidential Proclamation has been issued Honoring the Victims of the Tragedy in Santa Fe, Texas.
All US Flags and those flying with are to be lowered to half-staff until Sunset on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. If you have a flag that cannot be lowered, respect can be shown by tying a black ribbon or chord to the top of the staff.
May 14, 2018 - Tomorrow, Tuesday, May 15, 2018 is Peace Officer Memorial Day. The President has issued a proclamation ordering the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff from sunup to sunset on this day.
All flags flying with the US Flag should also be lowered. If you have an outside flag that can’t be lowered respect for the day can be shown by tying a black cord or ribbon to the top.
May 1, 2018 - Loyalty Day originally began as "Americanization Day" in 1921 as a counter to the Communists’ May 1 celebration of the Russian Revolution. On May 1, 1930, 10,000 VFW members staged a rally at New York’s Union Square to promote patriotism. May 1st evolved into Loyalty Day and the first official observance of the day was in 1959 after the signing of Public Law 85-529 on July 18, 1958.
April 19, 2018 - A Presidential Proclamation has been issued asking Flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor and as a mark of respect for former First Lady Barbara Bush. Flags are to be lowered from now until the day of her interment which is Saturday, April 21 untilsunset.
