October 11, 2018 - Women in the military have a history that extends over 400 years into the past throughout a large number of cultures and nations. World Wars I and II saw over 362,000 American women serving during war time. As of July 2016 women made up 14.6% of the US military and their role has changed significantly over the years from clerical duties to ground combat soldiers to fighter pilots. 

VFW Post 8904 Remembers September 11, 2001

September 10, 2018 - Those who we lost on September 11, 2001, will forever hold a cherished place in our hearts and in the history of our nation. By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001, (Public Law 107-89), Congress authorized the president to designate September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day" to perpetuate the memory of those who perished in the attack on America and to pursue peace and justice in the world and security at home.

August 28, 2018 - World War II came to an end with the formal surrender of the Japanese on September 2, 1945 aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay and this day has become known as VJ Day (Victory over Japan).

Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary will hold an observance on Monday, September 3, 2018 at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the History Courthouse in Center. 

August 28, 2018 - Honoring the memory and longstanding service of Senator John McCain, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation ordering the flag of the United States to be displayed at half-staff from now until sunset on the day of interment, Sunday, September 2, 2018.
