David's Daily Devotion for May 1

May 1, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, May 1.

Countdown to the National Day of Prayer! I hope you're planning to join us at noon tomorrow for this community event. It happens every year on the first Thursday of May, and here in Shelby County, Texas, we gather in front of our historic courthouse. Here's some prayer scriptures to get you in the mood.

David's Daily Devotion for April 30

April 30, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, April 30.

In 1885, a courthouse was built in Center, Texas. It was designed by an immigrant from Ireland, who created it to echo the ancient castles of his homeland. 139 years later, the Shelby County Courthouse remains one of the most interesting and beautiful buildings in Texas. And it is an appropriate setting for an event that is as old as America.

David's Daily Devotion for April 25

April 25, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, April 25.

Did you see the solar eclipse a couple of weeks ago? It was pretty cloudy where I was - didn't see much. I'll just catch the next one... in 2044. I've got the date circled on my calendar!

It was interesting to go online and see some of the wild predictions about what was going to happen when the sun went dark - major power failures, runs on grocery stores, etc. I even read about one guy who said it was a sign of the second coming of Christ.

David’s Daily Devotion for Apr. 24

April 24, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, April 24.

Last night I watched an interesting movie. It was a dramatization of a meeting between Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, and C.S. Lewis, the Christian writer. In reality, the two famous men never met, but it would have been interesting if they had, and the film was thought provoking.

Here's some thoughts from C.S. Lewis. I hope that they will speak to you this morning, and perhaps lead you to explore some of his work, books like "Mere Christianity" and "The Screwtape Letters".

David’s Daily Devotion for Apr. 23

April 23, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, April 23.

This coming Sunday morning, at First Baptist Church of Center, Texas, we'll be singing an anointed song of worship, "Majesty". It was written in 1981 by California pastor, author, publisher Jack Hyles. He led one of the first "mega-churches", The Church On the Way, wrote dozens of books, and over 600 gospel songs. On Sunday, we'll pair Majesty with a contemporary Christian song called "Christ, Be Magnified". It is our prayer that, in that moment, God will be given honor, glory, and praise.

David’s Daily Devotion for Apr. 19

April 19, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, April 19.

Do you know the term "dad joke"? Webster's Dictionary added it to their list in 2019. It's usually a short joke, a one-liner, a pun. Some people respond to dad jokes with a groan, but, as a dad myself, I think they're deeply hilarious. And so, at the end of a long week, and going into a springtime weekend, here's some dad jokes . . .  about the Bible!  Enjoy! (Or groan)

*How does Moses make his coffee?  Hebrews it.

*On the Ark, Noah got milk from the cows. What did he get from the ducks? Quackers.

David’s Daily Devotion for Apr. 18

April 18, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, April 18.

Do you know where the world's biggest church building is? Not surprisingly, it's in Vatican City, that tiny place in the middle of Rome that is the headquarters of the Catholic Church. St. Peter's Basilica (strangely, it's not a cathedral) was designed in the 1400's, before Columbus discovered America. It boasts a dome that rises 448 feet above Rome and contains 227,000 square feet of space. It is the largest church on earth.
