December 20, 2023 - I come from a very athletic family. I was the odd duck, sort of roly-poly and not good at sports. But I did and do love baseball. I especially love the Chicago Cubs. I always told my congregation that I would know I was in Heaven when the Cubs won the World Series and I could sing with a strong melodic voice! Well, the Cubs did win the Series in 2016, but I am still waiting on my singing talent.

There are some Christmas songs that really don't have anything to do with Christmas. "Jingle Bells" doesn't mention gifts or Santa or Rudolph - it's just a song about winter fun - but what would Christmas be without it! "Joy to the World" isn't inspired by Luke Chapter Two, it's based on the 98th Psalm - but what would Christmas be without it! This morning we look at a song that we sing all year round, but that most people don't realize is a Christmas song.

Today we share a story behind the beloved Christmas spiritual "Go, Tell it On the Mountain!"

In 1866, right after the end of the Civil War, a college was founded in Nashville called Fisk University. It was designed to provide education to all those who had recently become freedmen and freedwomen. Fisk is among a number of these kinds of schools that still exist today - Spelman University in Atlanta, Howard in Washington D.C., Xavier in New Orleans - just to name a few.
