May 1, 2025 - On May 1st, 1718, San Antonio de Valero Misson was founded by Franciscan Antonio de San Buenaventura y Olivares near present-day San Antonio. It was one of the early efforts by Spanish missionaries to convert American tribes to Christianity. This mission would later become the Alamo.

Happy May Day!  Feel free to dance around a maypole.  But the first day of May has another claim to fame.  On this day, in 1840, England issued the very first postage stamp.  It cost a penny and featured a portrait of Queen Victoria on a black background.  The “Penny Black” stamp is worth a pretty penny today!

I began as a child reading books. My teachers encouraged me to read. They enriched my intellectual life by insisting that I read certain books — history books, novels, biographies and other kinds of books. I was taught to take care of library books and thereby my own personal books. I came to love and use books very early in my life.
