Portacool Rebuilds After Devastating Fire, Invests in Plastics Production Facility

April 17, 2025 – On the scorching afternoon of June 17, 2023, the first call crackled over the Center Fire Department’s radio: Portacool’s manufacturing facility was ablaze. Within minutes, columns of black smoke towered over the north side of Center, marking the start of a harrowing battle that would last more than 16 hours. Local firefighters—assisted by units from Tenaha, Timpson, Shelbyville, Joaquin, Huxley, Carthage, Nacogdoches and DeSoto Fire District 1—united to contain the inferno, protecting nearby buildings and homes from the encroaching flames.

We continue today with our series “The Road to Resurrection,” focusing on what the Bible tells us Jesus did each day of the week leading to the first Easter. Wednesday of Holy Week is sometimes called “Silent Wednesday” because the Word gives no details about Christ’s activities on that day. Perhaps knowing what was to come, He spent the day in rest and prayer and preparation.

Free Public Lecture Explores How to Garden for Butterflies

April 14, 2025 — The Smith County Master Gardeners invite the public to a free educational lecture on Friday, April 25, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Tyler Public Library Taylor Auditorium, located at 201 S. College Avenue in downtown Tyler. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.

The program, titled “Gardening for Worms! Host Plants for Butterfly Caterpillars,” will be presented by Dawn Stover, USDA NRCS Study Leader and Agronomist at the East Texas Plant Materials Center in Nacogdoches.

“America’s First Documented Ghost” By Neal Murphy

April 11, 2025 - How many of you readers believe in ghosts? How many are on the fence about this? How do we reconcile accounts of ghost sightings by honest, reputable people who evidently witnessed a strange event? I have never witnessed a ghost sighting personally, but have, I believe, been visited by angels, but that’s another story.

Among the strangest ghost stories ever recorded happened in the unlikely state of Maine. I have nothing against Maine, but I do believe that if I were a ghost I would select a more populated area should I want to reveal myself.
