Family Crisis Center Board Names New Executive Director

February 11, 2021 - The Family Crisis Center of East Texas (FCCET) Board of Directors recently approved the appointment of longtime FCCET employee, Whitney Burran as the new Executive Director. Burran replaces Heather Kartye, who has been the Executive Director for the past 10 years. “Heather is leaving the agency in great hands. We are fortunate that she is staying on as long as needed to train Whitney and make the transition smooth,” said Dan Taravella, FCCET Board Chair.

DETCOG Sponsoring Grant Writing, Management Workshops

February 9, 2021 - The Deep East Texas Council of Governments is teaming up with Grant Writing USA to sponsor workshops on Grant Writing and Administration. These workshops will be for people that are wanting to learn how to find and write proposals for grants, as well as people that are wanting to manage and stay in compliance with grants that they have already received. Due to COVID-19, both workshops will be held in a virtual, Zoom format.
 

Rep. Chris Paddie Capitol Update: Gov. Abbott State of State, Committee Appointment, Broadband Expansion

February 8, 2021 - I hope many of you were able to catch Governor Abbott's State of the State address this past Monday. Gov. Abbott laid out 5 emergency items for the Legislature to begin addressing. These emergency items are (1) expanding broadband internet access, (2) ending the practice of defunding the police, (3) reforming Texas' bail system, (4) ensuring election integrity, and (5) providing civil liability protections for businesses relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.  

AG Paxton Announces $38.4 Million Settlement with Leading Opioid Marketing Consultant McKinsey

February 5, 2021 – Attorney General Ken Paxton on Thursday announced that Texas reached a $38.4 million settlement with McKinsey, one of the world’s largest consulting companies. McKinsey provided consulting services to opioid companies, including selling deceptive marketing plans, programs, and advisement to OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma for more than 15 years. Today’s agreement between 47 states, the District of Columbia, five U.S. territories and McKinsey resulted in a total settlement of $573 million.

Paddie Appointed to Chair Influential State Affairs Committee

February 5, 2021 - State Representative Chris Paddie (R-Marshall) has been appointed as Chairman of the State Affairs Committee.  

"I am excited to be working on issues that are vitally important to East Texas," said Rep. Paddie.  "This committee chairmanship will allow our district to have influence on many of the important issues that will be addressed by this legislature.  Now that we have committee assignments, I am looking forward to getting to work and tackling the many issues facing our state."
