David's Daily Devotion for February 12

February 12, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, February 12.

I fell in love with Broadway musicals as a teenager. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of seeing a dozen shows in New York, and the chance to be part of the cast or crew or orchestra of lots of community productions. One of my favorites is “Godspell”. It became a hit on the “Great White Way” in 1971, and was turned into a hit movie shortly after. Written by a Jewish composer, it’s based on the teachings of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount - a rather unlikely source for a piece of popular entertainment.

On this day, in 1847, the legendary inventor Thomas Edison was born. In the summer of 1877 he completed work on a new device that he called the phonograph. It played pre-recorded sound. Super Bowl LIX is just two days away! Do you remember your Roman numerals? (59). You don’t see them as often as you used to. My grandfather had a clock with them on it. In the old days the copyright dates for books and movies and songs were always in Roman numerals - but not anymore. Today, we use them for headings in outlines. Our Bibles use them to designate repeated books - II Kings, III John. And then, for some strange reason, there’s the Super Bowl.

David's Daily Devotion for February 5

February 5, 2025 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, February 5.

Have you ever had a “brush with greatness?” That’s the term for a momentary meeting with a famous person. I once shook hands with Ronald Reagan. I’m sure that moment made a deep impression on him! Honestly, it’s not a memory that I think about much. But, in 1982, as a college student in Houston, I met a man who made a very memorable - and surprising - impression on me.
