San Augustine County Airport Gets TxDOT Funding

March 7, 2017 - Money to be used for improvements     

LUFKIN – The Texas Transportation Commission approved in February $460,000 in Federal and state grant funds for the San Augustine County Airport. The funds will be used for planned airport improvements, including constructing pavement and lighting improvements.

The project costs are funded through San Augustine County and TxDOT’s Aviation Facilities Grant Program, which preserves and improves the state’s general aviation system. A project bid is expected to be approved before summer.

National Forests, Grasslands in Texas to Begin Forest Plan Revision Process; Public Meeting Schedule

March 8, 2017 - The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas is beginning a process to revise its Land and Resource Management Plan that will provides direction for managing recreation, forest vegetation, rivers and tributaries, fish and wildlife and cultural and heritage assets.

“The National Forests and Grasslands in Texas play a unique role in Texas’ landscape,” said Forest Supervisor Eddie Taylor. “A revised forest plan will further enhance the national forest’s contribution to the state’s ecological, social, and economic sustainability.”

March 8, 2017 - Last week, the House passed HB 4 and HB 5, which encourage kinship care and reform the Department of Family and Protective Services.  These bills were deemed emergency items by Governor Abbott in his State of the State address earlier this session.  I am proud of the work done by the House to protect our foster children and look forward to the Senate taking up these bills to continue the work started by the House.

Texas, Great Plains Wildfires Spurred by Dry, Windy Conditions

March 7, 2017 AMARILLO, Texas — Multiple wildfires are still burning across the Texas Panhandle following yesterday’s elevated fire conditions across the Southern Plains.

Texas A&M Forest Service responded to three large fires for 325,680 acres.

The Dumas Complex Fire, in Potter County near the city of Amarillo, ignited amid humidity values in the single digits and winds gusting in excess of 50 mph. The fire spread rapidly and threatened hundreds of homes. It is currently an estimated 29,197 acres and 75 percent contained.
