Texas Zika Illness Linked to Miami Travel

August 16, 2016 - A Texas resident who recently traveled to an area of Miami with local Zika transmission has tested positive for the virus. The traveler, an El Paso County resident, recently returned from the area and sought testing after becoming ill.

This is the first Texas case to be linked to travel within the continental United States. The case will be classified as “travel-associated” and is being investigated for more details.

Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Leadership Shelby County Class of 2017

August 15, 2016 - The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce will welcome the Leadership Shelby County Class of 2017 with a casual dinner at Sombreros on Wednesday, August 17. The Leadership Shelby County committee and alumni will be the hosts and hostess for the event.  Leadership Shelby County is a yearlong program designed to identify potential leaders and develop within these individuals the knowledge, skills and vision necessary to enable them to actively participate in the enhancement of their communities.  

Commissioners Award Over $19,000 to SCCAC, $50,000 to Archives

August 13, 2016 - The Shelby County Children's Advocacy Center is to be the beneficiary of over $19,000 in funding following the approval of the award of funds to the organization by the commissioners at their August 8, 2016 meeting.

Judge Allison Harbison stated the funds were capital credits originating from the electric companies.

"There's only specific ways that you can spend this money,", said Judge Harbison.

40th East Texas Poultry Festival Arts & Crafts Deadline, Aug 12th

August 12, 2016 - The deadline to apply for an Arts and Crafts vendor booth at the 39th East Texas Poultry Festival, sponsored by Farmers State Bank, is Friday, August 12. The festival will take place October 6-8 on the historic downtown Center Square. Limited spaces are still available and the applications are being accepted at the Shelby County Chamber office. Gold Sponsors for the Festival are City of Center and Tyson Foods.
