August 4, 2016 - The East Texas Poulty Festival is highlighted by the 4-H/FFA Broiler show and Auction that will be held on October 08.  As 4-H and FFA members and families are beginning to get ready for their chickens, questions may come to mind.  How big to make my pen?  How many fans do I need?  When do I raise my feeders and waterers?  These questions and many more will be addressed at the Shelby County Broiler Show Workshop.  

Texas on Alert for Local Zika, Urges Precautions

August 3, 2016 - With local Zika cases detected in Florida and increased travel to Brazil for the Summer Olympics, Texas is on high alert for local Zika transmission by mosquito bites and is urging everyone to strictly follow precautions. 

“It’s the perfect mix – local transmission in Florida, travel to Brazil, and we’re at the height of mosquito season in Texas,” said Dr. John Hellerstedt, Texas Department of State Health Services commissioner. “Local transmission here is likely at some point. The good news is that Texas is ready.” 

Commission Approves New Projects for Lufkin District

August 1, 2016 – The Texas Transportation Commission last week awarded 68 new construction projects statewide totaling more than $359 million, with five located in the Lufkin District that total more than $10.5 million.

Newly approved projects for the Lufkin District are located in Angelina, Houston, Shelby and Polk counties. Project totals and project descriptions include:

Help for Parents of Children who Stutter is as Close as Your Library

August 1, 2016 - Thanks to some generous donations, the Stuttering Foundation has donated a new DVD, entitled Kids Who Stutter: Parents Speak, to 8,800 public libraries across the country.

In this 16 minute DVD, parents and speech-language experts talk about how to promote easier talking as they interact with their children. The professionals offer simple tips that parents can follow easily.
