June 5, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, June 5.

It's "Hump Day" for Vacation Bible School at my church, First Baptist Center, Texas. We're halfway through our journey! Anyone who has ever worked in a VBS knows that it's an especially busy time. So, this week I'm letting the Bible speak for itself. No "two cents" from me. Maybe that's something we should do more often. I pray you are blessed and inspired by five more of my favorite scriptures. Let the Word of God speak!

DETCOG Extends Deadline for Emergency Housing Assistance

June 4, 2024 - The Deep East Texas Council of Governments (DETCOG) is extending its assistance program to families affected by the recent flooding in the region. The new deadline for applicants to apply is June 30, 2024

DETCOG has opened a special application window just for those families in its 12-county service area who are displaced from their homes by flooding that occurred under the declared disaster. Those who qualify will move to the top of the waiting list and be processed as soon as possible. 

TPWD Awards $4.5 Million in Recreational Trail Grants to Texas Communities

May 31, 2024 - During Thursday’s meeting, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved more than $4.5 million in grants, funding 16 trail construction and maintenance projects across the state.

The National Recreational Trails Fund (NRTF) supports recreational trail construction, renovation and acquisition through grants funded from a portion of the federal gas tax generated by fuel purchases for off-highway vehicles. The fund must be used to support a diverse mix of both motorized and non-motorized trail projects.

Smith County Master Gardeners to Host 2024 Nature Detective Camp

May 31, 2024 - Smith County Master Gardeners, Tyler Parks and Recreation, and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service have joined forces once again to host the third annual Nature Detective Camp. Based on the Junior Master Gardener ™ Wildlife Gardener curriculum, the program goal is to foster in each child curiosity about nature, a love for the outdoors, problem solving, leadership, stewardship, and a sense of community.

Fender Skirts

May 31, 2024 - I haven’t thought of fender skirts in years until recently. I was examining a few items in my toy car collection when I looked at my 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air which had rear fender skirts. I always liked the look on most of the 1940 and 1950 model cars which sported the skirts.
