Company Vying to Install Oilfield Waste Dump Reportedly Gave Campaign Contributions to Regulators (Texas Tribune)

February 2, 2023 - A company seeking to install an oilfield waste dump in Shelby County has reportedly made over $50,000 in campaign contributions to Texas Railroad Commissioners since 2019, and contributed $10,000 of that to the committee chair 15 days before they had an audience with the commission to plead their case, according to a Texas Tribune article.

Joaquin VFD Report Includes 4 Calls for Week of Jan. 22-28

January 30, 2023 - The Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department had a fairly average call volume for the week of January 22nd through 28th with 4 calls. Here’s a summary of the weeks events.

Sunday at 12:26pm a page was received in regards to a grass fire in a pasture on County Road 3361. Fire had covered a small portion of the pasture and was moving across the ground at a steady pace. The JVFD responded to the call with a single brush truck and put a quick stop to any further spread.

TxDOT Crews Pre-Treat in Preparation of Winter Storms

January 30, 2023 - Lufkin District crews will pre-treat bridges and problematic areas in Houston, Nacogdoches, and Shelby counties in preparation for any winter weather that could impact these areas this week.

Crews will also monitor and prepare for heavy rainfall expected later this week by inspecting drainage structures to ensure they are free of debris.

Motorists should be cautious of crews on the roadway and stay clear of moving equipment as roads are pre-treated. Reduce speed near work zones and obey all traffic control in place.

SC Grand Jury Hands Down 31 Indictments

January 25, 2023 - A Shelby County Grand Jury handed down 31 indictments on Monday, January 9, 2023. The grand jury was impaneled for the January 2023 term of the 123rd/273rd Judicial District Courts.

Sakendrick Jacobe Calhoun was indicted for forgery, third degree felony. The indictment alleges, on December 29, 2021, Calhoun possessed a writing that had been forged with intent to use, transfer, pass, publish, otherwise utter said writing which was purported to be a one hundred dollar bill. County Road 4323 Now Open

January 26, 2023 - Commissioner Bellmyer reports CR 4323 is open to all traffic, water has receded, barricades are now down and the roadway is open.


January 25, 2023 - Tom Bellmyer, Commissioners Precinct 4, reports CR 4323 is closed due to high water at the three bridges. This is the junction where Risingers, Flat Fork and Lightfoot creeks run together.

This information will be updated once the water has subsided and the roadway is safe to travel once again.
