Covid-19 Update: 10 New Cases, 2 New Deaths, 18 Active Cases

June 8, 2021 - According to the Texas DSHS Covid-19 Dashboard, during the first eight days of June there have been 2 new deaths, 10 new cases, and 7 new recoveries reported.

Total Confirmed Cases - 950 (4 new)
Total Probable Cases - 767 (6 new) 
Total Fatalities - 70 (2 new)
Total Estimated Active Cases - 18
Total Estimated Recovered - 1,629 (7 new)

County to Purchase New Courthouse Sign; Jail Receives Clean Bill

June 8, 2021 - The Shelby County commissioners approved the purchase of a new sign for the Shelby County Courthouse during their meeting on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.

Currently, the sign which is beside the courthouse is in deteriorating condition since it was damaged during Hurricane Laura in 2020.

A motion carried by the commissioners to approve $34,140 out of contingency fund to cover the expense of tearing the current sign down and replacing it with a digital message board.

National Weather Service Issues Severe Thunderstorm Watch

June 7, 2021 - The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch at 12:30pm on Monday, June 7, 2021. Watch 242 is in effect until 7pm for the following Texas counties: Angelina, Bowie, Camp, Cass, Cherokee, Franklin, Gregg, Harrison, Houston, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Morris, Nacogdoches, Newton, Panola, Polk, Red River, Rusk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Smith, Titus, Trinity, Tyler, Upshur, Walker, and Wood.

Shelby County Grand Jury Indicts 61 Cases Including a Capital Murder Case

June 2, 2021 - A Shelby County Grand Jury handed down 61 indictments including a capital murder case from April 2021 on Thursday, May 27, 2021.

The grand jury was impaneled for the July 2020 term of the 123rd Judicial District Court, and grand jury was held in both the 123rd and 273rd Judicial District courts. Due to COVID-19, there has been a backlog of cases and the grand jury impaneled just before pandemic restrictions were put in place is meeting again to complete their duties.

Shelbyville Water System Boil Water Notice Rescinded

June 2, 2021 - On May 31, 2021, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality required the Shelbyville public water system, 2100014 to issue a Boil Water Notice to inform customers, individuals, or employees that due to conditions which occurred recently in the public water system, the water from this public water system was required to be boiled prior to use for drinking water or human consumption purposes.

Two-Vehicle Crash Claims Lives of Three, Including Timpson Man

June 1, 2021 - DPS Troopers responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on US-59 on May 29, 2021 at 11:01pm, approximately nine miles south of the city of Carthage in Panola County. The investigators preliminary report indicates that the driver of a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling the wrong way on the multilane divided highway. The driver was southbound in the north bound lanes when it struck  a 2015 Ford F150 head on.
