Joaquin Rams Stadium on Thursday, October 31, 2024 –

The Joaquin Rams varsity football team trailed early but rallied to take a 44-28 District 11 2A-1 win over the visiting Shelbyville Dragons on Thursday. The win ties the two teams at 3-1 in the conference with one regular season game remaining and puts Joaquin’s overall record at 6-3 and Shelbyville’s at 7-2.

The Dragons gained the first lead when Gavin McDonald, substituting for injured Dragons quarterback DJ Barnes, found Hunter Harvey for a 60-yard scoring strike just 46 seconds from the start of the first quarter. Edwin Vasquez kicked an extra point to give SHS a 7-0 point advantage at the 11:12 mark. Early in the second quarter Shelbyville extended their lead to 14-0 when Ronnie Williams scored on third-down-and goal from the 1-yardline with 10:40 left in the first half.

Joaquin got on the board when Elijah Hardison scored on a run from 6-yards away. Dallon Jordan added a 2-point conversion run to cut Shelbyville’s lead to 14-8 with 6:49 left in the first half.

McDonald hit Harvey for a 31-yard touchdown reception and Vasquez added another extra point conversion which gave SHS a 21-8 lead with 4:26 left in the second stanza.

Tate Bass scored a 27-yard touchdown with 1:27 left in the half and Hardison added a 2-point conversion run which cut Shelbyville’s lead to 21-16. Joaquin stopped the Dragons on the ensuing drive and a 20-yard punt gave JHS the ball at the Shelbyville 49-yardline with 40 seconds remaining until the midway break. Moments later Bass scored on a 13-yard touchdown run with just 13 seconds left in the half. Jordan added a conversion run which gave the Rams a 24-21 lead which held up until halftime.

Hardison converted a 16-yard run for a touchdown, and he also added a 2-point run at the 2:31 mark of the third period. This gave JHS a 32-21 lead. Hardison intercepted a Dragons pass with just 39 seconds left in the third frame and JHS held possession of the pigskin going into the final period of play.

Justyn Brown scored a 3-yard touchdown with 10:30 left in the final period to give Joaquin a 38-21 lead. Shelbyville kept fighting and McDonald hit Tanor Doggett for a 62-yard scoring strike for a touchdown which cut the Ram’s lead to 38-28 with 8:49 left in the contest.

Jordan scored on a 1-yard run with 1:53 remaining and this proved to be the game’s final score.

The Rams will face the Garrison Bulldogs, at Bulldogs Stadium on Friday, November 8, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are 6-2, 2-1.

The Dragons will host the Hemphill Hornets on Friday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Dragons Stadium. The Hornets are 1-7, 0-3.

Four of Shelby County’s five varsity football teams won district games last week.

The Center Roughriders took a 49-12 home win over the Brownsboro Bears last Friday. The win improves the ‘Riders regular season mark to 7-1 and their District 8 4A-2 standing is at 2-1. They will next travel to Athens on Friday, November 1, 2024 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Athen’s Hornets Stadium. The Hornets are 6-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play after winning 48-9 at Rusk last Friday.

The Joaquin Rams are 5-3 overall and 2-1 in District 11 2A-1 after falling at home by a 52-49 score to the Timpson Bears last Friday. The Rams will host the 6-1 Shelbyville Dragons on Thursday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m. at Rams Stadium. The Dragons are 7-1 overall and 3-0 in District 11 after beating the visiting San Augustine Wolves last week by a 39-17 score.

Timpson is 4-3 overall and 2-1 in District 11 2A-1 action. They will host the Garrison Bulldogs on Friday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. at John Herbert Eakin Stadium. GHS is 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference after a 37-0 home win last week over Hemphill.

The Tenaha Tigers gained their first District 11 2A-2 win last week when they beat the Cushing Bearkats 31-8. Tenaha is 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference. They will travel to Grapeland Sandies Stadium on Friday, November 1 for a 7 p.m. kickoff. GHS is 6-2 overall and 3-1 in District 11 competition.

Roughriders Stadium on Friday, October 25, 2024 –

The Center Roughriders varsity football team beat the visiting Brownsboro Bears by a 49-12 score on Friday. The win improves the ‘Rider’s season mark to 7-1 and their District 8 4A-2 record is at 2-1. Brownsboro sits at 0-8, 0-3.

Center got on the scoreboard first when senior quarterback TJ Belin hit senior wideout Timothy Johnson for a 13-yard touchdown reception with 10:44 minutes remaining in the first quarter. Junior Pablo Huichapa kicked an extra point to give CHS an 7-0 point advantage.

With just 6 seconds remaining in the period, Brownsboro answered with a 53-yard scoring run by junior runningback Curtis Warren. An extra point attempt failed and Center led by a narrow 7-6 margin.

Belin hit Johnson for a 11-yard touchdown with 8:45 left in the second quarter and Huichapa converted another extra point kick to give CHS a 14-6 advantage.

Sophomore runningback Jeremy Bluford scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with 5:09 remaining in the first half to help give Center a 21-6 lead. The last play of the first half saw Roughriders junior linebacker Cody Adkinson intercept a Bear’s pass and return it 68 yards for a touchdown after the buzzer sounded. The Roughriders took a 28-6 lead into the second half of play.

Bluford scored his second touchdown of the game with 8:50 remaining in the third stanza and the Roughriders took a 35-6 lead. Belin found Johnson for another touchdown strike with 4:42 left in the third period and CHS led 42-6. Belin hit freshman receiver Yummi Barnes for a 20-yard score with 1:58 left in the period. Senior Omar Barcenas nailed an extra point kick to give CHS a 49-6 lead.

The final score of the game came when senior Bears receiver Keaton Delaney hauled in a 24-yard touchdown reception at the 5:50 mark of the final period.

The Roughriders will travel to Athens High School next Friday, November 1, 2024 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Hornet’s Stadium. The Hornets stand at 5-2 overall and 1-1 in district action.

This week saw all five Shelby County varsity football teams compete in district competition.

The Center Roughriders took a 42-19 road win over the Bullard Panthers. Center now stands at 6-1 and 1-1 in District 8 4A2 conference play. Center will Host the Brownsboro Bears on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. at Roughriders Stadium. The Bears are 0-6, 0-1 and there is no score reported yet for their game with Rusk on Friday.

The Joaquin Rams improved their record to 5-2 overall and they are 2-0 in District 11 2A-1 after a 52-26 road win over the Hemphill Hornets. The Rams will host the Timpson Bears on Friday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. The Bears fell 58-57 at home to the Shelbyville Dragons. Shelbyville is 5-1 and 2-0 in District 11. They will host the San Augustine Wolves on Friday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m.  SAHS is 3-4, 0-2 and lost Friday at home to Garrison 31-0.

The Tenaha Tigers are 1-6 and 0-4 in District 11 2A-2. Tenaha hosts the Cushing Bearkats on Friday, October 25 at 7 p.m. at Raymond Jackson Stadium. Cushing is 2-4, 0-2 and lost at home to Grapeland 40-0 on Friday.

Timpson’s John H Eakin Stadium on Friday, October 18, 2024 –

The Shelbyville Dragons varsity football team was able to improve their overall record to 5-1, and advanced their District 11 2A-1 conference mark to 2-0, with a 58-57 road win over the Timpson Bears on Friday. The Bears stand at 3-3 for the season and 1-1 in District 11 action. The game was the Bears 2024 Homecoming and sophomore Jaleah Thomas was named as Timpson’s Queen. She was escorted by her father Jared Thomas before the game.

Shelbyville’s first possession was ended when junior defensive back Braylon Parker intercepted a Dragon’s pass attempt giving THS the ball at their own 19-yardline. At the ten-minute mark Dragons senior defensive back Tanor Doggett regained possession of the pigskin by recovery a Bear’s fumble near midfield.

Shelbyville went 47 yards in 9 plays and scored when senior quarterback DJ Barnes hit senior wideout Jon Jon Mathis for a 7-yard touchdown pass with 4:35 left in the opening period. An extra point kick by freshman kicker Edwin Vasquez gave SHS a 7-0 lead.

A little over a minute later, senior tailback JJ Garner went 58-yards for the Bear’s first score. An extra point kick conversion by sophomore Alexis Castillo tied the game at 7-7 with 3:23 remaining in the first stanza.

Barnes hit Parker for a 55-yard touchdown completion reception and another extra point kick gave SHS a 14-7 lead with 2:27 left in the first quarter.

Garner helped tie the game at 14-14 with a 55-yard scoring run with 1:58 left, after Castillo added another conversion kick.

The final score of the first period came when Barnes hit Mathis who caught a pass tipped by a Bears defender for a 2-yard touchdown with time expired. An extra point kick by Vasquez sent the Dragons into the second frame with a 21-14 point advantage.

The Bears started the second quarter with an 83-yard kick return for a touchdown which saw senior La’Jordan McCollister pitch the football to Parker who ran for the score. An extra point kick tied the game at 21-21 with 11:47 still left in the first half.

Sophomore receiver Hunter Harvey scored on a 12-yard touchdown run and an extra point conversion kick gave SHS a 28-21 lead with 10:44 left in the half. This score was the halftime score.

The Bears tied the game at 28-28 when they went 40 yards in nine plays and Garner scored on a 3-yard quarterback keeper to cap the drive. Castillo added another extra point kick.

Shelbyville retook the lead at 35-28 with a Barnes keeper run for an 11-yard score and a Vasquez conversion kick in the middle of the third quarter.

Bears sophomore running back Jeffrey Richardson scored a touchdown with 1:17 left in the third frame and Castillo tied the game at 35-35 with an extra point kick.

Parker scored another Bears touchdown on a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter. A Castillo conversion kick gave the Bears a 42-35 lead. Shelbyville went up 43-42 with 6:16 left in the game when Barnes scored from three yards out on a run for a touchdown and Vasquez added the point after.

JJ Garner gave Timpson a 50-43 lead with a 17-yard touchdown and Parker added a 2-point conversion run with 5:25 left to play.

Dragon Tanor Doggett helped tie the game at 50-50 with a touchdown catch from Barnes with 4:22 left.

Parker added a 24-yard Bears touchdown with 2:50 left to play THS led 57-50 after a Castillo extra point kick.

Barnes scored an 11-yard rushing touchdown and a 2-point conversion run to his resume with just 18 seconds remaining to give Shelbyville the final 58-57 lead.

The Shelbyville Dragons will next host the San Augustine Wolves on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 7:30 p.m.

The Wolves are 3-4 overall and 0-2 in District 11 2A1. They lost at home to Garrison on Friday by a 31-0 score.

Timpson will travel to Joaquin on Friday, October 25 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Rams Stadium. Joaquin is 5-2, 2-0 after a 52-26 conference win on Friday at Hemphill.

Three of Shelby County’s five varsity football teams took wins and two teams took losses during district competition last week.

The Center Roughriders lost by a 59-21 score at Carthage last week. The ‘Riders are 5-1 overall and 0-1 in District 8 4A-2 competition. They will try to rebound at Bullard High School on Friday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Panthers Stadium. The Panthers are 2-4 overall and 1-0 after a 28-19 home win last week over Rusk.

The Joaquin Rams are 4-2 overall and 1-0 in District 11 2A-1 play after defeating the San Augustine Wolves 47-13 at home last week. The Rams will travel to Hemphill Hornets Stadium on Friday, Oct 18 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Hornets are 1-5, 0-1 in District 11 action after falling by a 35-22 score to Timpson last week. Timpson is now 3-2, 1-0 after the win and will host the Shelbyville Dragons on Friday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m. at John H Eakin Stadium. The Dragons are 5-1 after opening District 11 2A-1 play with a 43-42 home win over Garrison.

The Tenaha Tigers are 1-6 overall and 0-3 in District 11 2A-1 action after falling to visiting Alto by a 28-26 score. The Tigers travel to Mount Enterprise on Friday October 18 for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Wildcats Stadium. The Wildcats are 5-1, 1-0. They lost at Grapeland by a 44-0 score last week.
