January 6, 2023 - There will be no Timpson JV girls basketball game this evening, January 6, 2023. The JV boys will tip off at 5:00 PM against Gary at the Timpson Event Center. VG and VB to follow. Go Lady Bears and Bears!
January 6, 2023 - The Joaquin JV and Varsity Basketball teams will play in Beckville tonight, December 6.
The JV girls will start at 4:30pm in Junior High gym (back gym), while the JV Boys will play in the High School gym starting at 4:30pm.
Varsity girls game time will be 6:15pm, with the Varsity Boys following. Varsity games will be played in the High School gym.
Joaquin Rams Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 –
The Timpson Lady Bears and the Bears varsity basketball teams each took District 23 2A conference road wins during Tuesday’s meetings between Timpson and Joaquin High Schools.
The Lady Bears began to pull away from the Lady Rams in the middle stages of the first period and they led 14-8 by the end of the first quarter. They built a 11-point lead by halftime and THS led 29-18 at the midway break. By the end of the third stanza Timpson had a 16-point lead as they held a 44-28 advantage. Joaquin made up some ground in the final quarter but Timpson held on for a 53-40 win.
The Lady Rams was led by Ka’Maria Wilson with 10 points. McKenley Wynn led the Lady Bears with 15 points and teammate D’Chelle Garner scored 14 points.
The Lady Bears are 3-0 in District 23 action and 11-5 overall this season. The Lady Rams stand at 2-2 in district play and 10-11 overall for this season.
The Bears varsity boy’s basketball team took and impressive 72-42 win over the Rams. The Bears led 10-7 after one period. They held a 31-13 lead at the midway break, as well as a 44-29 lead after three quarters. The win boosted the THS record to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in District 23 2A conference action. Joaquin stands at 7-8 overall and 0-1 in district play.
The Bears were led by Terry Bussey with 27 points. Bears LT Washinton had 15 and Jackson Campbell had 11. Joaquin was led scoring by Gauge Jordan and Malik Stotts who each had 11 points.
Joaquin will head to Beckville High School on Friday, January 6, 2023 for district JV and Varsity games which will start at 4:30 p.m.
Timpson will host Gary High School at Bear’s Gymnasium on Friday, with JV tipping off at 4:30 p.m. and Varsity to follow.
Tenaha Special Events Center on Thursday, December 29, 2022 –
The 13th Annual Holiday Hoops Classic Invitational Basketball Tournament, sponsored by Longview Orthopedic Clinic, saw 39 Texas High School teams compete in three days of tournament action.
Local teams doing well at the tournament were Shelby County’s Tenaha Lady Tigers, the Timpson Bears, Shelbyville Dragons, and the Tenaha Tigers.
The Tenaha Lady Tigers took the Lady’s Championship over the Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill Lady Red Devils by a 39-31 score. Tenaha trailed 9-11 points at the end of the first period. They fought back to tie the game at 19-19 at halftime. THS held a narrow 32-31 advantage going into the final period, THS outscored the Lady Devils 7-0 in the final period to take the win.
The Lady Tiger’s Kayanna Cox took the tournament’s Most Value Player for the event. Teammates Kaedynce Cox and I’Tiyanna Dagley received all-tournament honor awards as well. The Lady Tigers have participated in the tournament since its inception. This is their first year to take top honors. Tenaha’s Tigers boys team took a seventh-place award as well this season.
The Timpson Bears fell to the Flatonia Bulldogs in a third-place playoff by a 59-43 score. Junior Bear Terry Bussey received the MVP tournament trophy and teammate LT Washington took all-tourney honors. The Timpson Lady Bears team competed for the fifth -place trophy but fell short to the Douglass Lady Indians by a 54-34 score.
The Shelbyville Dragons boys team competed well during the tournament but fell just short of the fifth-place trophy with a loss to the Douglass Indians by a 73-59 score.
Another Shelby County competitor was the Joaquin Lady Rams who opened up tournament play with an exciting win over Flatonia and they then went on to compete in consolation play after a loss to Mount Pleasant. Joaquin also helped host the event with several games being played at Rams Gymnasium.
The tournament concluded with the Mount Pleasant Red Devils defeating the Jefferson Bulldogs 63-41 to take the boys title.
Tenaha High School on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 –
The Timpson Bears varsity basketball team fell to the Jefferson Bulldogs by a 53-49 final score. The game was a Tenaha Holiday Hoops semifinal and the loss will send the Bears to a third-place playoff tomorrow with Flatonia at Tenaha’s SEC at 7:15 p.m.
The Bears trailed the Bulldogs 12-7 at the end of the first period. They battled back to lead 23-17 at the midway intermission. Jefferson cut the Bear’s lead to a single point at 36-35 by the end of the third stanza.
The fourth period saw the teams exchange the lead back and forth 6 times but Jefferson ultimately took the 4-point 53-49 win to advance to tomorrow’s final round of the tourney. They will face Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill at 8:45 p.m. in the Tenaha SEC for the tournament Championship.
Leading the Bulldog team was Kenneth Ross with 22 points. Timpson was led by LT Washington with 18 points.
Tenaha Holiday Hoops Tournament on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 –
Tenaha Holiday Hoops saw both the Timpson Lady Bears and Tenaha Tigers suffer their first losses of the tourney. These teams will now move on to the consolation side brackets of the event.
The Lady Bears fell in a close battle to the Huntington Lady Devilettes by a 32-27 score at Timpson’s Bears Gymnasium on Wednesday. The game was close throughout. Timpson was down 6-5 points midway through the first period and 10-11 at the end of the first frame. They fought hard in the second period outscoring HHS 8-5. The Lady Bears took a narrow 18-16 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter was low scoring with Timpson scoring 3 points and Huntington scoring 4. THS took a 21-20 advantage into the final quarter.
Huntington outpaced Timpson by a 12-6 point margin to gain the win with the final 32-27 score. The Lady Devilettes were led by Kyra Anderson with 12 points. Timpson was led by D’Chelle Garner with 13 and McKenna Wynn with 10 points. The Lady Bears will next play Normangee at Timpson Bears Gym at 4:30 p.m. today.
The Tenaha Tigers fell to the Flatonia Bulldogs by a 58-53 score. It was a close and hardfought battle. Flatonia held a narrow 22-17 lead at the end of the first period and a 34-29 lead at the half.
Tenaha cut the Bulldogs lead to two points at 44-42 by the end of the third stanza. Flatonia was able to outscore THS 14-11 in the final quarter to earn the 5 point win.
Tenaha was led by Pooh Moore with 19 points. Brikelian Kenny added 16 points to the Tigers tally sheet.
The Bulldogs were led by Duke Sodek with 14 points. The Tigers will face county rival Shelbyville High tonight at Tiger’s Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
December 26, 2022 - Dave Campbell’s Texas Football announced on December 22, 2022 that Timpson’s Terry Bussey was the recipient of the 2022 Mr. Texas Football High School Player of the Year Award presented by Kroger. Bussey will be honored during the TaxAct Texas Bowl on Wednesday, December 28 at the NRG Stadium in Houston.
Bussey is described as “a three-way superstar, Bussey Made his impact felt on seemingly every play.” He is rated as Dave Campbell’s Texas Football four-star prospect and as the state’s No. 1 ATH in the 2024 cycle.

Tenaha Special Events Center on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 -
The Tenaha Lady Tigers varsity basketball team took a convincing 101-31 win over the New Diana Eagles during Tenaha Holiday Hoops Day 1 tournament action on Tuesday. Tenaha took a 30-5 point lead by the midway point of the first quarter and they led 37-9 going into the second stanza. By the halftime intermission THS led 56-15. The Lady Tigers held a 62 point lead by the end of the third period and led 80-18 when the game headed to the fourth frame.
Scoring for THS was Kayanna Cox with 47 points, I'Taeanna Dagley 24, Kaedynce Cox 22, Mckaelen Reynolds and LillunnaHorton each scored 3, and La'Taejha Steadman 2 points.
NDHS was led by Katherine Yount with 9 points.
The Lady Tigers will face off with Normangee tommorrow, Wednesday December 28, at 10:30 a.m. for their next round game at Tenahas' SEC. The tournament runs through Thursday, December 29th.
Tenaha Tigers Gymnasium on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 –
Tenaha's Holiday Hoops Classic Invitational Basketball Tournament is now underway. Shelby County Today has been able to catch three of our county’s 5 participating teams in action.
The Tenaha Tigers Boys varsity team defeated the Zavalla Eagle by a 78-22 score after jumping out to a 23-0 lead midway through the first period. The opening frame ended with THS holding a convincing 40-4 lead. The Tigers were up 55-11 at the midway intermission. The end of the third stanza saw Tenaha ahead 67-19 going into the final period.
The Tigers were led by Kamarion Ross with 24 points. THS teammates also in double figures were Brikelian Kennedy with 17, Ja’Torian Moore and Kajavion Ross each scored 13.
The Joaquin Lady Rams defeated the Flatonia Lady Bulldogs by a 49-43 score in a game which was close and hard-fought throughout it’s entirety. Joaquin led 13-11 at the conclusion of the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs fought back in the second period and took a 30-20 lead into the lockerroom at the midway break.
Joaquin outpaced FHS 15-4 points in the third frame and JHS led 35-34 going into the fourth quarter. Joaquin outscored the Lady Bulldogs 14-9 points in the final quarter to earn the 49-43 win.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Summer Sodeck with 27 points. Joaquin was led by Ellie Anglin with 19 and Juli King with ten points.
The Shelbyville Dragons varsity boys team defeated the Huntington Red Devils by a 62-48 score. They led the Red Devils 28-23 at halftime, 44-39 points at the end of the third stanza and 62-48 at game’s end.
December 22, 2022 - The 13th Annual Tenaha ISD Longview Orthopaedic Holiday Hoops Classic starts December 27 and is three days of high paced action.
This year 39 teams from all across the Lone Star State will join us December 27-29 at 4 premiere high school gymnasiums and Panola College for the best 2A & 3A Basketball action in the State!!
Games will begin at 9am daily at each location (Tenaha Special Events Center, Tenaha ISD Tiger Gym, Timpson ISD Special Event Center, Joaquin High School and Panola College) and will have games throughout the day per the brackets - Girls, Boys.
Games will wrap up at the Tenaha ISD Special Events Center each evening with great entertainment and giveaways by Longview Orthopaedic partners.
The famous Tiger Cafe' will be open each and every day at Tenaha High School serving the same delicious food you have come to expect from the Holiday Hoops Classic - Lunch Menu will be available daily from 11-2pm and Dinner Menu will begin at 4:30-8:30 nightly.
