Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Detected in Shelby County Commercial Flock

December 13, 2025 - The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) and the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial flock (poultry) in Shelby County, Texas. This is the first confirmed case of HPAI in a commercial facility in Texas this year.

Following considerable mortality in the flock, samples were submitted to a Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory and confirmed December 11, 2025.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension to Host Forage Seminar Nov. 17

November 12, 2025 - The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office will host a Forage Seminar on Monday, November 17th, at the Shelby County Extension Office, located at 266 Nacogdoches St., Center, Texas.

A meal will be served at 5:30 p.m., followed by the program beginning at 6pm. The cost of attendance is $25 per person.

Participants will be eligible to receive 2 General and 1 Drift Minimization Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Digital Mammograms Available for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Shelby County Welcomes UT Health Mobile Digital Mammography Unit

October 14, 2025 - The Shelby County Extension Office and the Health and Wellness Committee are pleased to announce the return of the UT Health Mobile Digital Mammography Unit in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The mobile unit will be located on the Downtown Square in Center, Texas, on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, from 9am to 2pm.

2025 East Texas Poultry Festival Broiler Show Raises Over $168,000

October 7, 2025 - The 2025 East Texas Poultry Festival Broiler Show started off the day at the Shelby County Expo Center.

Seventy Shelby County 4-H and FFA youth exhibited at this year's show, with 40 pens of broilers making the sale. We would like to give special thanks to Judge Micah Osburn for taking the time to judge the show. Mr. Osburn spoke to several of the exhibitors and gave them several tips on how to grow an outstanding broiler.

Food Handler’s Training Course

September 15, 2025 - The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is pleased to offer a Food Handler’s Course, accredited by the Texas Department of State Health Services. This essential training, titled "Food Safety: It's In Your Hands," will be hosted by the Shelby County Extension Office on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, from 5 to 7pm. The course will take place at the Shelby County Extension office, located at 266 Nacogdoches Street, Center, Texas.
