September 8, 2020 - Those who we lost on September 11, 2001, will forever hold a cherished place in our hearts and in the history of our nation. By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001, (Public Law 107-89), Congress authorized the president to designate September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day" to perpetuate the memory of those who perished in the attack on America and to pursue peace and justice in the world and security at home.
August31, 2020 - World War II came to an end with the formal surrender of the Japanese on September 2, 1945 aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay and this day has become known as VJ Day (Victory over Japan).
Shelby County Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904 and the Auxiliary will hold an observance on Wednesday, September2, 2020 at the Veterans Memorial on the grounds of the Historic Courthouse in Center.
July 27, 2020 - VFW Post 8904 and auxiliary gathered on the downtown square to remember the heroes of the Korean War Armistice on its 67th anniversary on Monday, July 27th.
February 24, 2020 - On January 16, 1991, President George H. W. Bush announced the start of what would be called Operation Desert Storm—a military operation of coalition forces from 34 nations to expel occupying Iraqi forces from Kuwait, which Iraq had invaded and annexed months earlier. When the war ended on February 28th, 1991, 148 Americans had died in battle.
January 30, 2020 - The Spanish-American War lasted a little less than four months, April 21st – August 13th, 1898 and ended Spain’s worldwide empire. It ended with America easily defeating Spain and signaled the United States emergence as a world power. The blowing up of the battleship USS Maine in Havana harbor on February 15th, 1898 with the loss of 266 crewmen and marines in essence was the start of the war.
January 27, 2020 - The Paris Peace Accord ending the Vietnam War was signed on January 27, 1973, and was followed by the withdrawal of the remaining American troops on March 29, 1973. The terms of the accord called for a complete ceasefire in South Vietnam, allowed North Vietnamese forces to retain the territory they had captured, release of US prisoners of war, and called for both sides to find a political solution to the conflict.
October 25, 2019 - Veterans Day, November 11, is a time for Americans to pay their respects to all those who have served our country. One day to stand united in respect for ALL veterans, past and present. We celebrate and honor America’s Veterans for their patriotism, love of county and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
September 28, 2019 - Eighteen years ago, America launched its counterattack against terrorism in Afghanistan and ushering in OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and THE GLOBAL WAR ON TERROR.
September 20, 2019 - The United States’ National POW/MIA Recognition Day is observed across the nation on the third Friday of September each year. Americans take the time to remember those who are or were at one time prisoners of war (POW) and those who are still missing in action (MIA), as well as their families. National POW/MIA Recognition Day is not a federal public holiday in the United States but it is a national observance.
