As the story goes, the writer Ernest Hemingway was having dinner with some friends, when he offered a challenge. Who could write the best story - using only six words? Everyone put in $10, and the winner would get the pot. Hemingway won his own contest when he wrote... For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.

Sometimes God sends unexpected blessings. And sometimes those blessings come during challenging times. In March of 2020 the world was struck by a catastrophe unlike any we had ever seen. The Covid pandemic took many lives and closed schools, closed businesses, closed churches.

My youngest granddaughter had a big day this week, a big milestone in her young life - she took her first steps! She's 16 months old, a little past the point when most kids start walking, and we were starting to wonder. My theory is that she's been able to walk for some time now, she just chose not to. And the reason she made that choice is that she is a champion crawler. The girl can really scoot! So, why risk being on two feet when you're so good at being on all fours.

I love games. All kinds of games. Card games, board games, word games, puzzles, you name it! But in my twenties my favorite game was Trivial Pursuit. Maybe you've played it, too. It came out in 1981 and took the country by storm. Not as popular today, but I've still got one in my games closet and if you want to challenge me - just say the word!
It would be inappropriate and inaccurate to call the Word of God trivial. But, with respect, here are a few items that could be described as Bible trivia.

My devotional is a little late going out today. I attended a memorial service this morning for Jane Morrison. Miss Jane was the matriarch of her fine family, a cherished member of my church, and a pillar of the community. She was one of those from the "greatest generation". There are few of them left. It was an honor to honor her this morning.

In Cologne, Germany, there stands a magnificent Gothic cathedral. It is the number one tourist attraction of that large city, attracting more than six million tourists each year. It boasts distinctive twin steeples, or spires, that rise over 500 feet above the ground. That makes it the highest structure of its kind in the world. And on this day, August 15, in the year 1248, the cornerstone of the Cologne Cathedral was laid.
