May 24, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, May 24.
It’s gonna rain! Here in Shelby County, Texas we could get up to five inches over the next two days, and we’re under a flood watch. It’s gonna rain!
Our environment is so different from that of Bible lands. In an average 12-month period, we get over 50 inches of rain. There are parts of the Holy Land that get less than one inch all year long! Is it any surprise that words like "water" and "thirst" occur hundreds of times in The Word?
Do you know what a “polymath” is? It sounds like a really hard arithmetic problem! But actually, it’s a person who has world-class ability in more than one area. Leonardo de Vinci is probably the prime example of a polymath, or "Renaissance man". But a close second would be one of our Founding Fathers - Benjamin Franklin.
May 21, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Saturday, May 21.
At this time of year, every year, a particular piece of classical music is heard all across America. This music, perhaps, has been publicly played more than any other piece in the history of music. It’s called, of course, “Elgar’s March in D, Land of Hope and Glory.”
This Sunday, in our Broadcast Sunday School Class, I'll be teaching from Matthew 24:42 - "Be alert! For you do not know when your LORD is coming." That's Jesus talking, to His disciples and to us, about the end of the world, and His second coming. But I don't want to talk about the end of the world this morning. I want to talk about that word "LORD."
May 19, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, May 19.
This Sunday, our church, along with churches across America, will honor our graduates. We have about a dozen high school seniors and a half dozen who are graduating from college. It will be a memorable moment for our young people, for their families, for our church family.
May 18, 2022 - Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, May 18.
This afternoon I’ll be attending a funeral. A good friend lost his daughter to cancer. And a few years ago he lost his wife to the same cancer. And he faces cancer now himself. At times in our lives, it seems that we are given more than we can bear. Perhaps you’ve had times like that in your life. Perhaps you’re going through a time like that right now.
We turn to friends. We turn to family. We turn to The Word.
May 17, 2022 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, May 17.
On May 17, 1971, a musical premiered at a little theater in New York City. It was called "Godspell" and took its theme from the Book of Matthew, from Christ's famous Sermon on the Mount. In 1973, the "little musical that could" was turned into a successful Hollywood movie. And the live production has been playing somewhere in the world pretty much ever since.
When we moved to our place just east of Tenaha, Texas, there was an old hummingbird feeder hanging on the back porch. I cleaned it out, filled it with sugar water, hung it back up, and sat back and waited for the hummingbirds. That was four years ago... and I'm still waiting.
On May 14, 1984, a baby boy was born. His name was Mark Zuckerberg. At the tender age of 19, he created a website called The Facebook. Later the “the” was dropped. And today over 3 billion people are regular users. I’m thinking that you’re probably one of them.
I teach the Broadcast Sunday School lesson each Sunday at 9am. It goes out to local cable TV and FM radio. And it live streams, as does our 10:15 worship service, on our Facebook site - FBC Center, Texas - and on our website - fbccenter.org. We would be honored and blessed to have any of our Daily Devotion readers to tune us in.
