On this day, 37 years ago, a memorable moment occurred in New York City. The remembrance of that event serves as an appropriate postscript to yesterday's patriotic holiday. On July 5, 1986, the Statue of Liberty reopened to the public after a two-year, 40 million-dollar renovation.

DPS Increases Enforcement for July Fourth Holiday

July 3, 2023 – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Texas Highway Patrol is stepping up enforcement efforts this July Fourth holiday aiming to keep people safe as they celebrate America’s Independence Day.

“We know people will be out celebrating our nation’s freedom and we encourage everyone to do it in a responsible way,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Please be mindful of our state’s traffic laws, be courteous of other drivers on the roads and make safety your first priority so everyone can have a good holiday.”

July 3, 2023 - Gordon was San Augustine’s finest truck farmer. He farmed in the Patroon Creek bottom and occasionally on the old Horne place. He taught me to drive a tractor, tie turnip greens with bear grass and know when a watermelon’s ripe.

June 30, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Friday, June 30.

A couple of times in my life, I've had the blessing of being an ESL teacher, English as a Second Language. My students were adults who had immigrated to the United States. I had great admiration for them, as I watched how hard they worked to give their families, their children, a better life in America. And I was inspired as I watched them work hard to learn English, a difficult language - and sometimes a crazy language!

Tree-killing Emerald Ash Borer confirmed in Cooke County

June 30, 2023 - The presence of the invasive emerald ash borer (EAB) has been confirmed in Cooke County this week. EAB is an invasive wood-boring pest of ash trees that has killed millions of trees across 35 states since its arrival to the United States in 2002.

On June 21, Texas A&M Forest Service collected several adult beetle specimens in northern Cooke County and tentatively identified them as EAB. The beetles were collected in an EAB trap that is part of a state monitoring program run by Texas A&M Forest Service each year.
