July 25, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, July 25.

Last night I did something I've never done before. It was three a.m. and I had had a visit from insomnia, a frequent visitor since I turned left at middle age. This time, however, instead of turning on the TV, or turning over and trying to get back to sleep, I decided to go outside.

Solicitation Process Coming Soon for Ecosystem Services Projects

July 24, 2023 — Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will soon begin seeking proposals from public or private entities to construct nature-based carbon sequestration infrastructure or other projects that will harness other similar ecosystem services on TPWD properties.

House Bill (HB) 4018, passed in the 88th Texas Legislative Session and effective September 1, allows TPWD to enter into agreements through an innovative conservation model providing both wetland protection and carbon credit-based revenue to the agency.

Leadership Shelby County Taking Applications

July 24, 2023 - The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce will soon establish the 2023-2024 Class of Leadership Shelby County. Applications are currently being accepted for a nine month long program designed to identify potential leaders and develop within these individuals the knowledge, skills and vision necessary to enable them to actively participate in the enhancement of their communities.

“The Fire Siren” by Neal Murphy

July 23, 2023 - Some time prior to 1940 the town of San Augustine, Texas purchased a fire siren, and placed it atop the city hall building. This building, which still stands, housed two fire trucks. The purpose of the siren was to alert the citizens and the volunteer firemen of an emergency, usually a fire. It said to everyone that somebody needed help.

When the people in town heard the siren, it told them that there’s an emergency going on somewhere. It also warned the people to be alert for volunteers responding to the firehouse, and to watch out for fire trucks.

July 21, 2023 — This year, hunters in Texas will notice an increase in messaging about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and its impacts to the state as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) launches a new public awareness campaign.

The campaign aims to share information with hunters and the public about how they can help protect Texas deer and stop the spread of this deadly disease.

Today we complete our series on heaven, with a devotion that's not really about heaven. Confusing? Well, hear me out.

Do you remember how you felt three years ago in the summer of 2020? That was three months into the pandemic shutdown, and it was a time full of questions. How long would it last? What would the new normal be like? Would life ever really be normal again?
