As Texas educators continue to focus on the difficult task of recovering from pandemic-related learning loss, the 2022 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often called the Nation’s Report Card, shows both strengths and challenges for Texas, while painting a grim picture for the U.S. as a whole.

The urge to know the future is wired into our DNA. It’s what keeps all those palm readers and fortune tellers in business. But Isaiah 46:9-11 tells us that there is only One who knows what lies ahead.

46th Annual East Texas Poultry Festival Wrap Up

October 21, 2022 - The 46th Annual East Texas Poultry Festival was three days full of fun and activities. There were a record number of people attending which even caused a shortage of entry buttons for the event!

All events kicked off with the Doo Dah Parade on September 28, and this was followed by the ETPF Scholarship Pageant where Sayre Hall was crowned ETPF Queen. She and the Queen's court later cut the feathers during opening ceremonies at the festival on October 6. Related events continued from then on until the festival came to its conclusion on October 8, 2022.

PUCT Adopts Rule Prohibiting Disconnection of Water Service During Extreme Cold Weather Emergency

New Rules Apply to non-Municipal Public Water and Sewer Utilities

October 21, 2022 – The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) adopted on October 20 rules prohibiting non-municipal public water and sewer utilities from disconnecting customers during extreme cold weather emergencies. The new rules mean those utilities cannot disconnect service or issue late fees for nonpayment of bills due during such emergencies, including for bills previously due.

Habitat Conditions Could Present Challenges for Waterfowl Hunters this Season

October 21, 2022 – Dry conditions across the state could pose some challenges as waterfowl hunters gear up for the start of the new season. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) biologists indicate habitat conditions are not ideal for ducks and duck hunters in many parts of Texas. However, weather pattern changes in addition to timely cold fronts and significant rain events could help improve hunter’s fortunes.

East Texas Forests Growing Strong

October 21, 2022 - The forests of East Texas are thriving, thanks to modern forestry practices and a strong forest-products economy.

“Over the last 20 to 30 years, there’s been a lot of focus on growing higher-quality trees,” said Dr. Aaron Stottlemyer, Texas A&M Forest Service Forest Analytics Department Head. “Every year, we’re producing better and better trees that are growing faster.”

That, in turn, translates to a robust forest with benefits for the Texas economy.
