Suspect Indicted by Grand Jury for 3rd Degree Felony Timber Fraud in Jasper County

March 7, 2021 – Troy Grice of Groveton, Texas, was indicted on February 25, 2021, by a grand jury in Jasper County on the charge of Timber Purchase as Trustee with Intent to Defraud. Grice is charged with defrauding a Jasper County landowner of between $20,000 and $100,000 worth of timber – a felony of the third degree.

Timber theft can take a variety of forms – from harvesting timber without the landowner’s knowledge or consent, to entering into a formal agreement, harvesting a landowners timber, and then not paying them the full purchase price.

Texas to Receive More Than 1 Million COVID-19 Vaccine First Doses; Hope to Receive Johnson & Johnson Vaccine

March 7, 2021 - The 13th week of vaccine distribution starts March 8, 2021 and Shelby County has two provider on the list. Brookshire Brother's Pharmacy is allocated to receive a total of 100 Moderna vaccine doses. Hope Community Medicine is allocated to receive a total of 100 Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses which will be the first to arrive in the area and is a single dose vaccine.

Shelby County, a part of Public Health Region 4/5N, reports over the past week an additional 744 people have been vaccinated with at least one dose for a total of 2,095.

Biologists Examine Winter Weather Impact on Texas Wildlife

March 5, 2021 — As much of Texas has experienced historic winter weather, native wildlife populations throughout the state have also felt the impact. Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) reminds the public that many native wildlife species will be able to survive short durations of historic low temperatures and snow events. However, long-term impacts on a variety of wildlife and their habitats, especially on vegetation, may not be known for weeks.

March 4, 2021 - Texas Independence Day is celebrated on March 2nd and commemorates the creation of the Republic of Texas in 1836 after our declaration of independence from Mexico. Sixty men signed the Texas Declaration of Independence including the legendary Sam Houston, who would go on to be president of the Republic of Texas, a US Senator after Texas joined the United States, and later the governor of Texas. His birthday also happens to fall on March 2nd.

Shelby County 4-H, FFA Livestock Show and Sale Official Results

March 3, 2021 - The 16th Annual Shelby County 4-H and FFA Livestock Show was held February 27, 2021 at the Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Arena with over 100 exhibitors. Weigh-in of market animals started at 7:30 a.m. and the show began at 10:00 a.m. with rabbits judged by Mr. Frank Farrow. Carl Muntean, judged the lambs, goats, swine, and cattle. Both judges were very informative and interactive with the youth and animals. The Buyers Appreciation dinner and Livestock Auction was held later the same day at the John Dean Windham Civic Center.
