DSHS Adds Lysosomal Diseases Testing to State’s Newborn Screening Panel

September 4, 2025 - Texas Department of State Health Services added four lysosomal disease tests to its newborn screening panel in August, pushing the number of conditions every baby born in Texas is screened for to 59. Each baby is screened twice, meaning around 800,000 specimens are tested annually in the Texas Newborn Screening Laboratory to help find infants who may have one or more of the medical conditions.

Hearing loss and critical congenital heart disease are additional point of service tests, typically conducted by the birthing facility.

When you walk into a lot of churches you’ll find a room called The Fellowship Hall. It’s a place where the congregation gathers - gathers for potluck meals, for banquets, for special occasions - for well, fellowship.

That’s kind of a “church” word, fellowship. It’s our word for what the world would call a party.

Land Commissioner Announces Completion of Accessibility Improvements on South Padre Island

August 30, 2025 — On August 28, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., announced that the City of South Padre completed construction, funded in part by the Texas General Land Office's (GLO) Coastal Management Program (CMP), to improve accessibility at Neptune Circle, Beach Access #16 located on Gulf Boulevard between East Saturn Lane and East Venus Lane. The improved beach access point is once again open to the public.

Texas Game Wardens Emphasize Safety Ahead of Labor Day Weekend

August 30, 2025 – With Labor Day weekend marking the unofficial end of summer, Texas Game Wardens will patrol waterways across the state to enforce laws and regulations while doing all they can to keep the public safe on and around the water.

Last year during Labor Day weekend, wardens reported nine boating accidents, one boating-related fatality and one open-water drowning. They arrested five individuals for boating while intoxicated (BWI) and one minor for boating under the influence.
