My Five Cents: Texas Top State for Business

July 26, 2018 - Did you know in July of 1832, a band of settlers in Nacogdoches attacked the town's Mexican garrison and took back the town in answer to an order requiring Texans to surrender their weapons? While not well known, the Battle of Nacogdoches, not only freed East Texas from Mexican military rule, but also served as the starting point of the Texas Revolution and led to our state becoming what it is today.

County Conservation Partners Host Local Work Group Meeting

July 25, 2018 - The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Texas and their local Soil and Water Conservation Districts cordially invite the public to attend their FY19 Local Working Group (LWG) meetings. 

The purpose of this annual LWG meeting is to set local conservation priorities and bring conservation stakeholders together to discuss conservation topics and issues relevant to helping their farmers and ranchers better conserve on-farm natural resources.  

Shelby County Winter Forage Seminar

July 24, 2018 (Flyer/Registration Form) - Texas A&M AgriLife Extension is hosting Shelby County Winter Forage Seminar on August 14, 2018 at 6pm in the Extension office. The cost is $10 per person in advance and $15 at the door. RSVP by August 9, 2018 at the Extension office or by mail with payment.

Dr. Vanessa Corriher-Olson, Texas A&M Forage Specialist will speak about "Rye Grass, Small Grains, Legume Varieties, Planting and Fertilizing."

A Letter About Turning 70

July 23, 2018 - Some people say that age is just a number but there are many ‘age milestones’ that people are proud of in their lives. First, there is the teen year (13), followed by the adult year (21) and over the hill year (40). Once a person reaches 50 and in some places 65, senior citizen is the title obtained and Medicare cards are found in plenty wallets and monthly Social Security checks begin.

TxDOT Advises Lane Closures Scheduled in Angelina, San Jacinto Counties

July 23, 2018 Lufkin – Work is scheduled in Angelina and San Jacinto counties on Wednesday and Thursday that will cause traffic to be rerouted.

The US 59/SL 287 Southbound Direct Connector at South First Street in Lufkin will be closed Wednesday afternoon from 1 pm to 5 pm for follow-up inspections to the bridge. Traffic will be detoured to the South First Street exit ramp for motorists needing to access US 59 South/South First Street.

Denning Animal Rescue Capital Campaign Commences

July 23, 2018 - Denning Animal Rescue, an all-volunteer no-kill animal rescue, has started its 2018 Capital Fundraising Campaign. The East Texas Rescue is raising funds to renovate two donated mobile homes into intake facilities for the foster-based rescue. 

Fosters are reluctant to take in animals, who have not been through quarantine, for fear of making their own pets sick and often lack the space to adequately quarantine animals themselves.
