“As Dead as a Doornail” by Neal Murphy

April 15, 2017 - I have used the expression “dead as a doornail” many times, and I am sure that you have, too. We are not alone. Since the 14th century people have declared things to be dead as doornails. It makes sense that inanimate objects are dead, but then so are diamonds, doughnuts, and doorknobs. So, why do we use the expression “dead as a doornail”? What are doornails, and why are they so dead?

Center HS Theatre to Perform at FUMC

April 14, 2017 - As part of the First Methodist Church Concert Series, the CHS Theatre department will perform Anne Frank and Me, a multi-generational play for all ages, at First United Methodist Church Sunday April 23 which is nationally recognized as Holocaust Remembrance Day. The public is invited and admission is free.

The Theatre Department performed the play earlier as a dinner theatre at Center High School, but they were excited to be invited by the church to perform it as part of a special occasion.

TxDOT Work Planned in Lufkin District for Coming Week

April 13, 2017 LUFKIN – A new construction project is scheduled to begin this week in Houston County that will rehabilitate FM 3151, west of Lovelady.

The $3.1 million project will include the reconstruction and widening of pavement on FM 3151 from FM 1280 to FM 230. The project length is 4.5 miles and the project completion date is mid-summer, weather permitting. Drewery Construction, Nacogdoches, will serve as contractor.
