Buzz Into Action: Texas Pollinator BioBlitz Starts Friday, Oct. 11

October 3, 2024 - Texans are invited to see and document pollinators buzzing into action Oct. 11-27, 2024 during the Texas Pollinator BioBlitz. This annual event celebrates the bees, wasps, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, nectar-feeding bats and other animals that serve as pollinators across Texas.

Many pollinator species have seen declines in their population, which could spell trouble. These important insects, birds and mammals are key to sustaining native plant species, human food crops and even crops for livestock.

David’s Daily Devotion for Oct. 3

October 3, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, October 3.

Here in Shelby County, Texas we're all about . . . chickens! Raising chickens for meat is one of our biggest industries. There's a Tyson plant here and scores of chicken "farms" where half a dozen times a year thousands of chicks are delivered to run around in chicken "houses" until, in just a few weeks, they're the right size for your dinner table. Each American, on average, eats over a hundred pounds of chicken each year. Over 10 billion chickens are raised annually for meat.  Talk about a big business!

Shorter Days Bring Higher Risk for Pedestrians

October 2, 2024 – While fall and winter give Texans a much-needed reprieve from the summer heat, the change in seasons also brings fewer daylight hours, making it harder for drivers to see pedestrians and keep them safe.

October is the deadliest month for pedestrians, with 80 pedestrians dying in Texas traffic crashes in 2023. In the Lufkin District in 2023, there were 48 traffic crashes involving pedestrians, resulting in 13 pedestrian fatalities and 13 pedestrian serious injuries.

October 2, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, October 2.

I was going through some of my collections the other day and came across a coin with an interesting history - the 1943 Steel Penny. I wouldn't call myself a coin collector, I only have a couple of dozen. I've shared in this venue about one of them, a 2000-year-old Roman coin that I imagine being held by someone who saw Christ.

Early Vaccination a Defense Against Serious Illness as New Flu Season Begins This Month

October 1, 2024 - Texas Influenza Awareness Day is today, and DSHS recommends Texans get vaccinated against flu as soon as possible to protect themselves and their families from illness. Because the body takes about two weeks to make flu antibodies after getting a flu shot, early vaccination is critical as flu cases traditionally begin to rise this time of year.

David’s Daily Devotion for Oct. 1

October 1, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, October 1.

Today, former President Jimmy Carter will accomplish something that no other president has accomplished in U.S. history. He will turn 100 years old. In the fall of 1976, there was another historic occurrence, as David Mathis voted for the first time in a presidential election and cast his ballot for the peanut farmer from Plains. Well, it was an historic moment for me!
