"Name That Kid" by Neal Murphy

September 6, 2024 - I have been told by my older relatives that I was still un-named a week after I was born. My aunt Margaret Woods apparently had pity on me, and finally gave me a name. My paternal grandmother was a Neal, so she hung that Sir name on me. I have wondered why my parents waited so long to give me a handle. Usually the expecting parents have a couple of names selected prior to the baby’s birth. It could have been that I was the last of three, so the new had already worn off by the time I came along as the caboose.

Do you enjoy antique stores? Second to bookstores, they're my favorite place to spend time on a leisurely Saturday afternoon. Over the last few years, however, I've had a few disconcerting moments in antique stores. While walking through the cluttered aisles, I'll notice something, usually a toy or a game, from my own childhood - maybe an Etch-A-Sketch or a View Master or a Magic Eight Ball. And it is in moments like these, that I am struck by the sobering truth that I, too, am an antique!

Funding Opportunities Available to East Texas Landowners for Prescribed Burning

September 4, 2024 — Texas A&M Forest Service is offering more than $800,000 in grants to help East Texas landowners offset the cost of prescribed fire to reduce wildfire risks and restore ecosystems.

The grant application is now available for eligible landowners conducting prescribed burns on their property by certified and insured prescribed burn managers. The deadline to apply is September 30. Eligible landowners may receive reimbursement for up to $30 per acre for the costs of the prescribed burn, but rates may vary.

TxDOT District Holding Public Hearing on US 59 / US 259 Interchange Project

September 3, 2024 – TxDOT is hosting a virtual public hearing with an in-person option on Thursday, September 5 for the US 59/US 259 North Nacogdoches (Future I-69) construction project. This project is being designed to bring US 59 and the US 59/US 259 interchange up to current interstate standards by making it a controlled access roadway and reconfiguring the interchange.
