SC Appraisal District Depository Bids Public Notice

October 30, 2015 - The Shelby County Appraisal District hereby gives notice that it will enter into a contract for a district depository as required by law.

Any banking corporation, association or individual banker in Shelby County, Texas is invited to submit an application for such depository by December 31, 2015. Bids may be submitted to Robert N. Texas A&M Forest Service Awards $15.7 Million in Grant Funds to Volunteer Fire Departments

October 29, 2015 - Intense wildfire seasons and life-altering emergencies call for better equipment and more training for our firefighters on the frontline. With over 85 percent of Texas fire departments being operated by volunteers, funding for essential equipment and training can be hard to come by.

The Texas Legislature allocates funding to Texas A&M Forest Service for pass-through grants to Texas volunteer fire departments in an effort to help them better protect lives and property.

City of Center Hires Parks/Recreation Director

October 28, 2015 - Recently, the City of Center created a position and budget for a Parks and Recreation Director. The City has hired Jason Mitchell for this position.

I use the terms “we” throughout this piece because of the fact that so many people in the City strongly support the City’s decision to create this position.

We believe the City has shown tremendous vision and financial courage to create a position and support a department that can have a direct and positive influence on the youth of our community, and even create programs for adults.

Jesse Amason, Citizen/Patriot of the Republic of Texas

October 28, 2015 Presented by the William Carrol Crawford DRT - Jesse Amason arrived in Texas by 1834. Amason fought in the Texas Revolution and received two land grants from the Republic of Texas. He also had received a Mexican head right land grant of a "league and a labor" (4605 acres of land), which was recognized by the Republic of Texas. Jesse located that grant in Shelby County Texas. Sarah A. (Inman) Amason received a widow's pension because Jesse also fought in the War with Mexico in 1846 and in 1847-48.

TxDOT Maintenance and Construction Updates, Oct 26-30

Week of October 26-30

October 26, 2015 - The nine-county Lufkin District is busy completing projects as well as continuing other major improvements on many roadways throughout the district.

Motorists have seen changes daily in the $58 million construction project on SL 287 at US 59. Webber, contractor for the project, will hang beams over the east and westbound main lanes in coming days, weather permitting. The work will be scheduled during night hours and announcements will be made once the time is determined.
