August 13, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, August 13.

As a kid, I remember going to the post office and looking up at the bulletin board and seeing all the “wanted” posters - the FBI Ten Most Wanted List. And I remember hoping I never ran into any of those guys! Today, the post office in my little town of Tenaha, Texas doesn’t have any posters like that. I guess the FBI does it online now, or maybe they caught all those guys. I’m thinking it’s probably the former.

August 12, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, August 12.

We’ll be climbing close to triple digits today, here in the heart and the heat of the summer. So lets cool off with a Christmas themed daily devotion. On August 12 in the year 2 BC, the nght sky featured a conjunction of the planets Saturn and Venus. A conjunction is when two planets appear very close to each other, combining to make one very bright light. Some theologians (and astronomers) offer this phenomenon as a possible source of the Star of Bethlehem.

In the late summer of the year 70 AD, at about this time, the mighty Roman army destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem. The Holy City had been under siege for months, until the ancient walls were finally breached and the great place of worship, of sacrifice, the center of Jewish life, was burned to the ground. Today, two thousand years later, the Temple has yet to be rebuilt.

August 6, 2026 - Good Morning. It’s Thursday, August 6.

At 8:15 on the morning of August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber flew over the center of a city called Hiroshima. It dropped a bomb nicknamed “Little Boy”, a weapon that was unique in the history of the world. It carried the power of 15,000 tons of TNT, and when it ignited, 90,000 human beings died in an instant. 50,000 others died in the next few months from radiation poisoning. Three days later a similar bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Six days after that Japan surrendered. And World War II was over.

Have you heard about “Kalshi?” It’s one of many sites that have sprung up on the web recently called “prediction markets.” Places where you can wager money on what will happen in the future. Sports scores of course. But also on what the high temperature will be in New York City today, whether a politician will say a certain word in a speech, who will win the next Oscar, or whether the U.S. will drop a nuclear bomb on Iran - pretty much anything and everything. You can even bet on the Second Coming of Christ!

Every once in a while I have the pleasure of playing with a little gospel bluegrass group. Just a pick up band with guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and upright bass. This morning we’ll share some favorites at a local senior center. Seniors are always a sweet and supportive audience, ready to smile and tap a toe. Ready to sing along.

August 3, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Monday, August 3.

Last night I had the pleasure of playing with a local community band in an annual event called The Orchestra Bash. The ensemble, about 35 players strong, with winds and brass and strings and percussion and keyboards, was made up largely of band directors. They get together each year around this time, right before school starts, for an afternoon rehearsal and an evening concert. Much fun!

July 31, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, July 31.

We say goodbye today to a month named after Julius Caesar, and stand on the threshold of a month named for another Caesar called Augustus. The Roman Emperors of old are still very present in our modern culture. And they were certainly very present in the time of the New Testament. Julius Caesar reigned about 40 years before Bethlehem, during the period between the Testaments. But we find the name Augustus in the second chapter of the gospel of Luke.
