July 2, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, July 2.
Baseball is “America’s Game”. Well, technically, football makes lots more money - more than twice as much. But there’s just something about baseball. Something about joining your fellow Americans at the ballpark. Something about rising to your feet at the beginning of a game and singing the National Anthem. For most people it’s the only time they sing in a group, with the possible exception of a Sunday morning worship service.

Each day this week, leading to the 4th, we’re looking at patriotic songs - and all five have one thing in common. They all mention God. That’s not surprising for today’s song, “My Country, ‘Tis if Thee”, when you realize it was written by a Baptist minister.
June 30, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, June 30.
We continue this morning with Patriotic Song Week here at the Daily Devotion, on the way to Independence Day and America’s 250th birthday. Most of this week’s songs are very old, over a century old. June 26, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, June 26.
Are you excited about the Semiquincentennial? That’s a mouthful! I’m talking, of course, about our nation’s 250th anniversary - just a week away. Maybe you’re old enough to remember where you were when America celebrated her 200th birthday, the Bicentennial. I was 19, with a year of college under my belt, and no clue whatsoever about what I wanted to be when I grew up.

Here’s some old sayings. You’ve probably heard all, or at least most of them.
Haste makes waste
A rolling stone gathers no moss
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth
You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink
Don’t put the cart before the horse. (Why are so many of these about horses?!)
All that glitters is not gold
People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones
A stitch in time saves nine
June 19, 2026 - Good Morning! It’s Friday, June 19.
Yesterday I reminded our readers that this Sunday is Father’s Day. But it’s also another notable occasion. It’s the first day of summer. Here in Texas we don’t wait for the official date - it’s felt like summer for a while now. You’ve probably heard the joke - What are the Four Texas Seasons? Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer, and Christmas. Not too far from the truth.
