Women's History Month: Elma Swindall, Selma Swindall McClelland

March 8, 2019 - (IN MEMORY) Elma Swindall and Selma Swindall McClelland, two sisters who made a great impact to education in the Shelby County area and in Center. Miss Elma would always boast about her playing basketball secretly until her mother, Mahalia, finally gave in after encouragement from Miss Mody Nobles, who was the coach back then. After graduation from college, Miss Elma began teaching and continued for many years before retirement.

Johnson-Garrett Family Reunion

September 20, 2018 - A gathering of the family of Andrew and Caroline Johnson (both deceased) completed its 57th annual Family Reunion on the weekend of June 15-17, 2018 in San Augustine  and Center, Texas. This family consists of the descendants of Andrew’s son and daughter: Frank Johnson and Fannie Garrett (both deceased). 

A Letter About Turning 70

July 23, 2018 - Some people say that age is just a number but there are many ‘age milestones’ that people are proud of in their lives. First, there is the teen year (13), followed by the adult year (21) and over the hill year (40). Once a person reaches 50 and in some places 65, senior citizen is the title obtained and Medicare cards are found in plenty wallets and monthly Social Security checks begin.

Keep the Legacy Alive: Remembering Professor Sampson

May 31, 2018 - Keep the Legacy Alive for Daniels School as we remember the last principal, Mr. Clifford Perry Sampson who was known as Professor Sampson.

Like his counterpart, Mr. Daniels, who was mentioned in a previous article, he believed that almost all children have equal capacity to learn. It is noted that he was an honor student the entire time of his pursuit of degrees in spite of working many jobs to pay his tuition.
