In my old age, I’ve returned to two practices that were important parts of my early life - reading and memorization.

I don’t remember being read to sleep at night, but I remember always taking a book to bed. As a kid, reading was like breathing - not something you chose to do, but something you couldn’t live without. Books were a window into other places, other people, other lives. I loved books.

I love newspapers. I grew up reading The Houston Post. It shut down its presses 30 years ago. Like many papers, it folded in the face of this new, digital age. The Houston Chronicle is still going strong, it’s the third largest paper in America, but the majority of its readers read it online. That’s the way I get my news every morning, through the internet version of the number one newspaper in the U.S. - the New York Times. 

Stop Wildfires Before They Start: Memorial Day and Summer Safety Tips

May 23, 2025 - As Texans prepare to celebrate Memorial Day—the unofficial kickoff to summer—Texas A&M Forest Service urges everyone to take proactive steps in preventing wildfire ignitions.

Recent high temperatures and reduced rainfall are causing wilting grasses and dry vegetation across parts of the Eastern Hill Country, South Texas, Central Texas and Southeast Texas, areas where small wildfires could occur. In the Trans Pecos region, ongoing drought and dry, dormant vegetation in the mountain ranges continue to pose a wildfire risk.

SCOM Urgently Seeks Food, Monetary Donations

May 23, 2025 - Shelby County Outreach Ministries is urgently seeking donations of fresh produce from local farmers to sustain its Senior Citizen Feeding Programs. These programs are facing significant challenges due to government cutbacks.

Shelby County Outreach Ministries' Senior Nutrition Site, located at 124 Haley Drive, is accepting donations of fresh produce, canned foods, and monetary donations.
