Shelbyville Native Teams with Boys and Girls Club for Super Hero Festival

June 19, 2018 - Shelbyville native and children's book author, Shad Thompson, has become a superhero by teaming up with the Boys and Girls Club of Nacogdoches to host Kidz Book Zone Super Hero Festival. The festival is July 28th and starts at 11:11am at 2712 Park Street in Nacogdoches, Texas. There will be free snacks, water games, and activities for the kids.

Thompson, a 1991 graduate of Shelbyville High School, has released several children's books two of which are Solar Power League and A Hero's Origin.

42nd East Texas Poultry Festival Seeks Arts and Crafts Vendors

June 19, 2018 - Planning is underway for the 42nd East Texas Poultry Festival, presented by Farmers State Bank.  The Poultry Festival will be held October 4-6 on the historic downtown Center square, with chairmen Josh Payne, leading the steering committee. Arts and Crafts vendor applications are being accepted at the Shelby County Chamber office until Friday, August 10.  To receive an application and a copy of the guidelines call the Chamber office or go online at www.shelbycountychamber.com.

Chamber Announces Shelby County Grill Fest Winners

June 18, 2018 - The Shelby County Grill Fest Barbecue Cook-off was held Saturday, June 9 at the Windham Civic Center in Center, Texas, with cook teams from across east Texas and western Louisiana vying for over $6,700 in prize money and the Grand Champion trophy along with bragging rights.

The barbecue cook-off was presented by Farmers State Bank and sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbecue Society. The event featured five cooking categories including beans, brisket, chicken, ribs and dessert.

Mangum Funeral Home, Taylor Funeral Home 2018 Scholarship Recipients

June 18, 2018 - Five seniors from Shelby County High Schools received a $500 scholarship from Mangum Funeral Home and Taylor Funeral Home. The owners and staff would like to congratulate these recipients as well as all of the other graduates in Shelby County and send best wishes for a bright future. Both Funeral Homes are owned by Danny and Shannon Mounger. 

Center Citizen Thanks First Responders for Lifesaving Efforts

June 18, 2018 - To whom it may concern, 

I would like to give special thanks for saving my life and my house from fire as I, Rusty Perry was asleep while controlled burning in back yard got out of hand of people burning.

I am a very hard sleeper, when police officers awoke me and firefighters put out the fire which had gotten into underbrush which was growing up next to the house!

June 15, 2018 - Life, like dealing with your mother-in-law, is all the more challenging if you can’t laugh at it once in a while. No other relationship has created more love or hate, depending upon your situation, than mothers-in-law. Men all learn, sometimes too late, that when they marry that beautiful young lady they are also marrying her family. The mother-in-law seems to create angst more than any other in-law. Consequently, there are more jokes told about her than any other family member.
