David's Daily Devotion for September 3

September 3, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, September 3.

On this day in 1967, the entire country of Sweden made a change.

At 5am that morning, Swedish drivers moved from the left side of the road to the right. Can you imagine? Government leaders had been discussing this change for over a decade, and carefully planning it for several years. All of Europe drove on the right side, and Sweden had been driving cars with left-side steering for as long as anyone could remember. But still, 83% of Swedes were against it.

The first issue of the Scientific American magazine hit the presses in 1845. It remains the oldest continuously published periodical in U.S. history. On the morning of December 6, 1877, a man walked into the magazine's New York City office . . . and made history.

As the story goes, the writer Ernest Hemingway was having dinner with some friends, when he offered a challenge. Who could write the best story - using only six words? Everyone put in $10, and the winner would get the pot. Hemingway won his own contest when he wrote... For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.

You could think about that story for a long time.

David's Daily Devotion for August 22

August 22, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, August 22.

My youngest granddaughter had a big day this week, a big milestone in her young life - she took her first steps! She's 16 months old, a little past the point when most kids start walking, and we were starting to wonder. My theory is that she's been able to walk for some time now, she just chose not to. And the reason she made that choice is that she is a champion crawler. The girl can really scoot! So, why risk being on two feet when you're so good at being on all fours.

David's Daily Devotion for August 21

August 21, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, August 21.

On this day, in 1911, a painting was stolen from the Louvre Museum in Paris. It was missing for two years, and during that time it became world famous. Before the theft, this artwork was relatively unknown outside of art circles. The crime propelled it into the limelight, made the "Mona Lisa" the most celebrated painting in the world.
