David's Daily Devotion for January 10

January 10, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, January 10.

Willie Amos Criswell went home to glory on this day in 2002 at the age of 92. W A (as he was known) was the pastor of First Baptist Church of Dallas for five decades. He came to lead that congregation in 1944, replacing George Washington Truett, who had been pastor for almost a half century. So, in the span of 100 years, First Baptist Dallas had just two pastors. In the last 30 years, they've had four!

David’s Daily Devotion for Jan. 9

January 9, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, January 9.

Today's devotion is all about 3:16. There are 49 "3:16" verses in the Bible. Why not 66? Well, some books, like Psalms, have a 3rd chapter with less than 16 verses, and other books, like Jude, don't have a 3rd chapter at all.

Here are a few notable "3:16s" . . .

Matthew - When Jesus had been baptized, as He came up from the water, suddenly the heavens opened and the Spirit of God descended like a dove and alighted on Him.

David’s Daily Devotion for Jan. 8

January 8, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Monday, January 8.

There's a particular part of our worship service at First Baptist Center that we try to keep simple - our invitation. We use just a few songs that are frequently repeated. I want our congregation to be listening to the moving of the Spirit in that moment, not worrying about the lyrics and melody of some new song. Our focus this morning is on the hymn we sang at our altar call yesterday.

David's Daily Devotion for January 5

January 5, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Friday, January 5.

I've been thinking about beginnings and endings.

On January 5,1954, a young truck driver walked into Sun Studio in Memphis and made a recording. Elvis Presley went on to sell 500 million records, but that was the first one.

On January 5,1970, four lads from Liverpool walked into Abbey Road Studio in London and made a recording. The Beatles would sell 600 million records, but that was the last one.

Beginnings and endings.

David’s Daily Devotion for Jan. 4

January 4, 2024 - Good Morning!  It's Thursday, January 4.

There's so much negative news as we start a new year - thought you might like something funny and sweet for today's devotion.  A third-grade teacher, as a class project, asked her students to write letters . . . to God.  The results were hilarious and heartwarming.  Here's a few of them.

Dear God, Did you mean for the giraffe to look like that, or was it an accident? - Norma

Dear God, Do you draw the lines around the countries? - Jake

David’s Daily Devotion for Jan. 3

January 3, 2024 - Good Morning!  It's Wednesday, January 3.

Houston is my hometown.  And on January 3, 1962, something extraordinary began there, a dream really.  On that day, ground was broken on a new kind of sports stadium, a "domed" stadium.  It was the first of its kind in the world.  There are many in the world now, but the Astrodome was the first.

David Daily Devotion for December 20

December 20, 2023 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, December 20.

There are some Christmas songs that really don't have anything to do with Christmas. "Jingle Bells" doesn't mention gifts or Santa or Rudolph - it's just a song about winter fun - but what would Christmas be without it! "Joy to the World" isn't inspired by Luke Chapter Two, it's based on the 98th Psalm - but what would Christmas be without it! This morning we look at a song that we sing all year round, but that most people don't realize is a Christmas song.
