David's Daily Devotion for June 24

June 24, 2022 - Good Morning! It's Friday, June 24.

On June 24, 1901, a very famous man was born in Brown County, Indiana. His name was Charles Hollis Taylor. Doesn't ring a bell? Hold on, I bet you've heard of him. Indiana is a state that's crazy about basketball, and so Chuck, as he was known, grew up in the right place. He played high school ball and then was part of several semi-pro teams that barnstormed around the country.

David's Daily Devotion for June 23

June 23, 2022 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, June 23.

Yesterday afternoon, the lights went out in Center, Texas. For several hours, over a thousand homes and businesses (including First Baptist Church) had no power. At least we were able to go outside and enjoy the 100-degree breezes... yikes! But, by suppertime, order - and air conditioning - had been restored.

David's Daily Devotion for June 21

June 21, 2022 - Good Morning! It’s Tuesday, June 21.

On June 21, 1948, the Columbia Recording Company introduced a new product. Since the early 1920’s, the world had been listening to discs that were made from shellac and that played at the speed of 78 revolutions per minute. These “records” had a poor, scratchy quality and were only five minutes long. The new product, on vinyl, had five times that length and a smooth, clear sound. The world of music had changed forever.

“The Sabine River” by Doug Fincher

June 20, 2022 - During the 40’s, the high light of the year for the Fincher boys was to fish on “The Old River.” Since we didn’t own a car, we depended on “Jink,” one of my Mother’s brothers, to take us fishing in his dump truck. After passing the Doug Fitt’s Farm near the river at the intersection of the Sabine and Teneha Creek near Huxley, Texas. Since Toledo Bend did not exist at that time, the Sabine River presented one of the most pastoral sites of any body of water in East Texas. Nothing could match the beauty of the willows that hung softly along the banks.

David’s Daily Devotion for June 18

June 18, 2022 - It’s Saturday, June 18.

My father was born on June 18, 1913, in North Zulch, Texas - a northern suburb of Greater Metropolitan Zulch. Just kidding. It was, and still is, a largely rural area about a hundred miles north of Houston. His father was a sharecropper, which means he worked incredibly hard, and someone else got most of the profits. At least my grandfather had a 16 member farm team - his 16 children! It was a culture built on hard work, with little opportunity for education. And then something happened that changed my dad's destiny.

David's Daily Devotion for June 17

June 17, 2022 - Good Morning! It's Friday, June 17.

I'm taking a day off today - my first in a while. It's been a busy time in our church lately. And we're thankful for that! The odd, eerie quietness of the church calendar during much of the pandemic period is giving way to more and more opportunities for ministry events and programs. To God be the Glory!
